Right, I've tried again with Tracktion v1.0.5.196 and I've gone back to a earlier version of my Audiophile 2496 drivers just in case, v5.10.00.27 with the same result, sound on the left channel only. I was almost certain this problem wasn't there in earlier versions, guess I was wrong. DR008 'still' works perfectly with FLS/Cubase 5.1 so the fault must be with Tracktion somewhere...............

My common logic says that it is only "kinda" Tracktion related. Here's why. There are many of us, myself included, who get Tracktion to work with DR-008. Now, if it was strictly a problem with Tracktion only, then wouldn't everyone have this problem? Or even if it was a DR-008 problem, everyone would have it when used with Tracktion.
But if I'm using the same version of Tracktion and DR-008 as you and getting no problems, then SOMETHING on your system is different from mine. There is proof that the versions can work together, or nobody elses would work. So there has to be something somewhere that is different. Yes, we use different soundcards, so there is an option. Different processors, amounts and types of RAM, etc. Not saying your setup is faulty, but it just inserts something somewhere that makes Tracktion behave badly on your maching with DR-008. You don't have the same problem with other hosts, so it's something that your computer does between these two progs that makes it break. Or your other hosts just don't access VSTi's in the exact same way.
I think I just confused myself. But I'm racking my brain trying to figure out what it could be. You have a setting somewhere that is different from mine.
Have you tried using a 3rd party ASIO or even WMD driver? Or just use a generic driver. If you can find one, maybe you can totally count that out. Also, check the setup panel for your card to see any settings for mono/stereo, left/right speaker swap, available outputs, etc.
Have you tried changing all types of settings in the DR-008 setup, like the outputs and such? Also change which outputs you are using in Tracktion.
Have you tried installing on another computer to see if it works for you?
Sorry to maybe suggest stuff you already have tried, but I really am trying to help you find the answer, because I know how powerful these tools can be together. Can you maybe let me know what you have tried, or exactly what settings you have in DR-008 and Tracktion. Maybe then I can try the same setup. Let me know if anything here works or not. Good luck!

Since the issue seems such a mystery, here's a completely clueless shot in the dark: what about your rewire set up? I'm throwing out this suggestion because a while ago I was having mysterious problems with Kontakt and Kompakt acting very badly in various hosts like Cubase SX2, Orion, etc. I reported my problems to NI and to all the host vendors. All vendors reported, not surprisingly, that their software worked perfectly and was not to blame. Lots of users on various forums also reported that they were not seeing the problems I was experiencing. The implication, of course, was that my system was faulty even though it seemed to run just fine -- this problem, aside.
After days of uninstalling and reinstalling everything I could think of on my system, I finally tracked down and disabled every single rewire-related dll -- for every single rewire-related application on my system. Amazingly enough, I was able to determine that VSampler's implementation of rewire caused very unpredicatable and bad behavior in Native Instruments plugins in various hosts -- even though I was not actually *using* VSampler or its rewire code. I had merely *installed* it on my system. It seemed really hard to believe that the mere *installation* of one vendor's product would cause bugs in a second vendor's product when that second vendor's product was used as a plugin in a third vendor's application! But, there it was. I reported this discovery on the VSampler forum and -- even more amazingly -- many weeks later, the VSampler development team verified that it was true, in fact, and, eventually, fixed the problem!
Anyway, it's probably a million to one; but, you never know!

Good news
I disabled Rewire (thought I already had) and moved to 4 stereo outputs (from one stereo) and everything 'seems' to be working ok again. Not sure which cured the problem but I hope it lasts this time.
Thanks all for the help/suggestions

Isn't the one on that site the "G-Media Edition?" I'm not exactly sure what that even means. But I've seen that and I wonder if it's the full version. If it is, one would be out of his mind not to jump on that, as the DR-008 is worth far more, especially with the over 3GB of kits now available.

If you read this, it sounds like dr008 plus a custom groove library. For $49, it's worth a try for me.
