ASIO Driver Open Failure

Hello, Just recently started having a major problem. An ASIO Driver failure crashes Tracktion 7/8.
I am on Windows 8.1 using a Line 6 UX2 as my audio interface. I migrated to a new computer in 2015 and never, ever had this problem until just recently. Now, often midway through recording, Tracktion will crash. I check the settings tab and there is no device listed and an error message appears saying: "error when trying to open audio device - ASIO driver open failure." I then unplug and replug in the midi cable from the UX2, restart Tracktion and Tracktion will then usually recognize the audio device. But I do not get far along until it suddenly happens again. I tried a few computer tweaks suggested by the Line 6 forum but it just happened again.

I don't know if this problem is related to Line 6, Tracktion or a random VST. But this is extremely frustrating. If anyone can help me solve this problem, I will be eternally grateful!

The UX2 has problems with USB 3.0 ports sometimes, I bet thats
your issue.

Solution: buy a new interface... That one is 10+ yrs old already.
Time to let it go...

Or use a USB 2.0 port.

Good luck...

Aloha,
I checked and I did have the UX2 plugged into a 3.0 usb port. I will try to switch and see if that works. Although, I have not had this problem with the UX2 plugged into a 3.0 port for 1 1/2 years until now. Thanks for the tip. Fingers crossed!!

I think its more about the crappy line 6 drivers, still 32 bit after all these years.
Slightly updated a while ago for windows 10 compatibility when the OS came out, not since,
far as I know.

Anyway, hopefully USB 2.0 will solve it for you.

Aloha,
*heh, we never really say that here, but I appreciate the sentiment.

... and there's always the chance that an older audio device is failing (a cheap capacitor beginning to leak?). I've certainly had such a failure trigger annoying and incredibly difficult to trace errors in years past, and such errors usually occur in the middle of recording when the device began to heat up...

Sadly the migration to usb 2.0 failed as well. I got about a half hour in before it crashed again. I have the most recent Line 6 drivers and firmware installed. I would hate to part with this interface as it is excellent for recording direct guitar. The Line 6 forum has quite a few complaints about this issue, although no one mentions this problem while using a DAW. But most of the posts are from 2013 and my system has been working flawlessly with my new computer since 2015. Tovakas, I will check into the heat source to see if that is causing any problems. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Get yourself a line 6 Helix, you'll instantly forget all about it. :)

Seriously though, I have a 10 year old UX2. Was using it up until a few days ago on
a new win 10 laptop I got recently. I replaced it because the cheap laptop provides no way
to disable power management at the UEFI level and the line 6 driver cannot recover from
being put on standby.

So, if I were you, I'd check that power management is completely disabled. If so, you
could try rolling back to an earlier driver, especially if you've updated it recently.

I used it under win 8.1 in the past as well, but scrapped it due to the lame drivers.
You could try using ASIO4ALL as the driver for it, if its still fails, definitely that would
be a strong indicator of hardware failure.

I had a similar problem and it was simply a bad connection in the jack on the interface. I used a different cable, and tightened it up and I don't have the issue. That message will show up when the computer loses touch with the interface, so don't neglect the connections.

Trying all the suggestions one at a time.
- Moved unit away from heat source
- Disabled power management - I got about an hour before the driver crashed again.
- Checked the UX2 connection and replaced USB cable - still crashed
One ASIO driver crash was during a render, another was while trying to save the project - which has never happened before.
Now when I restart Tracktion, unplug/replug in the UX2 to reload the ASIO driver, it will not even allow me to open the project.
App Hang B1 or App crash. I also seem to be having a problem with some of my USB ports. My I-Lok says I have changed my system and I have to load a USB stick several times to get the computer to recognize for access. I wonder if Tracktion has any role to play in this. I am also curious to know why an audio driver crash would also crash Tracktion. I wouldn't mind having to reset the ASIO driver occasionally if it did not also crash Tracktion when this happens. I will try the ASIO4ALL option in the next few days to see what happens.....Thanks a lot for the responses.
