Now that's surprising. According to this Java crunch ability is on par with C++, except for trig. Sure flies in the face of my experience with Java apps. Maybe they skewed the tests.

Has anybody tried this with Borland C++ Builder?

I have MS C++, I'd just rather not use it!

I was actually referring to JUCE, but having said that, that second link is a killer! Any idea when those components might be released?

Thanks,
Gwydi

Oh aye! JUCE thread and all. Sorry.
No idea about the components. Never read the site actually. Not interested in Win32 only stuff.

Hi - apologies if this has already been answered someplace else, but has anyone tried to build JUCE using DevC++ (using mingw)?

I gave it a quick try yesterday; I imported the provided MS VC++ project and got several warnings and errors... Hardly surprising but I'm quite keen on using JUCE and I was wondering whether someone had already done the work for me :D

Many thanks,
Mies

Yeah, I'm looking for a compiler too, does anyone know of any free ones that work?

Post

No vertical sliders! Shreek!! :-o

Hackity hack hack [scratches head] hacky hack...

Bingo! Got em now.

Hmmmmmmmmm. I like this, it makes sense.

Oh theres free compiler doodads at Microsoft. VS Express or something. Aint got a scoobie how handy they are though. Do a search in Host/Plug Development for "compilers". heaps of stuff in there somewhere.

Anyone had any success with the express versions?

Post

VC++ Express expires in March next year, I believe...
As for the Toolkit2003, it lacks some components and I'm not talking about the IDE - you have to download the SDK, and it still won't be complete (then again, Microsoft are no business fools and will not make their compiler freely available).

GCC/Mingw are free and well supported but not nearly as polished as MS VC. Digital Mars C++ is pretty good.

Just to reiterate (but I'm afraid the fact nobody replied is a sign :( ): has anyone built JUCE w/ mingw (or perhaps DMC++)?

Post

Dev-C++ support amongst other things.

New timecode methods for midi! 8)

Wow, I'm kind of in poor spirits about this at the moment. I just checked the website and in order to get a different license for JUCE, Jules is asking for $700-$1200. I'm sorry, but I just don't have this kind of money. I want to make VST plug-ins with this without breaking any kind of licenses, but now it's not possible. I'm not even saying that I want to charge for these plug-ins. Can there be another license that's much cheaper for those who want to release freeware VSTs? Maybe I'm just a bit naive.

And I REALLY was getting excited when reading through the documentation and these forums. :(

I think its very fair and well thought out. Heres why...

You have to buy most products before you can learn how to use it. JUCE, the full product, is free for everyone to use. So you can become very good at it or you can decide its not for you. How many times do you get to learn a peice of software (legally) without restrictions then buy it when it has a better chance of success and better deal than a recording contract for making you money?

In most recording contracts you have about 18 months before you start seeing any real return. The stars you see living it up are spending their advance if they have just signed. All the touring, hotels and "posse" is payed by the record company then comes out of the artists money. Its called an "advance" because its an advance on the money you make. In many cases the artist looses rights over their work. And if the record comapny do not find you viable, your dropped...Although they get to keep your work.

Think how much Trackton would have cost if one of its competitors had made it and then think about how likely it would be before you would have learned it throurghly without spending a penny then bought it when you where about to release a single with an option to upgrade when enougth people have shown enougth in your product to make it worth it.

Code a program, see what your user base is saying. A free program will be more likely to be tested to destruction. Listen to what your userbase is telling you then try to make changes. When your website is getting more hits than Google and more downloads than a porn site its time to charge people for the "version 1.0". If your learning and selling enougth to be able feasibly give up your day time job and program full time the multi licence will be part of your business costs anyway. There are not many professions where you can get most of what you need to for £699.

Its a cross platform tool made the programmer who made a music program using the tools he's giving away ...Free until you can make money using it.

Sounds fair to me. A good programmer/business person is more likely to make more money than musicians. Look who is the richest guy on the planet...And he isnt a musio :)
