3 years approach? More a necessity i'd say. There were unplanned circumstances, port audio etc. They decided this way based on business calculation as every serious company. 3 years probably doesn't fit in there too well.

That was in response to the post immediately following mine, about paying more for nothing specific when I had infact specified thrice what I was willing to pay extra for.Fleer wrote:I'm afraid no one responded to your suggestion because few actually approve. I for one would prefer the "old" Bitwig approach: if you purchase BWS (2.0) at launch, you get 3 years of included updates. But, by any means, start a poll thread.maschinelf wrote:

I would suggest to add another option, as your reference to "the old model" could refer to the present model or the original one. Mine would be: "I prefer the original model including three years of complimentary upgrades". Maybe also add the possibility to reflect whether people own Bitwig 1, Bitwig 2 or none, as to see how these options may result into actual purchases.

Re-read your original post and separate post thrice and still don't get your idea.maschinelf wrote:That was in response to the post immediately following mine, about paying more for nothing specific when I had infact specified thrice what I was willing to pay extra for.Fleer wrote:I'm afraid no one responded to your suggestion because few actually approve. You want some kind of FLStudio's licensing?
Well... it's bs.
Who knows, how that should stimulate development.
I'd rather pay for prioritized support. Or maybe some kind of crowd-funded features.
I'm attaching adequate explanation of standard development business model from the link I posted earlier.

I'm thinking of different ways to attract new customers to Bitwig, as I'm not sure they will love the idea of the current license model, nor will they appreciate your lifetime proposition.
If you're a new guy looking at Bitwig, having tried the demo and wondering if you'd take the jump, you want to be sure to get at least two to three years of updates and upgrades included before you jump in and pay the price.
On the other hand, I'm seeing people trying to get rid of their Bitwig licenses for less than half price and not getting any luck, which means two things: they don't want to keep Bitwig and other people don't want to get it, even at half price. All in all, I believe the license model is the culprit and your limited lifetime idea isn't going to convince them.
Stimulating development also means getting and keeping a larger user base, IMNSHO.

The only problem with the old model is that quite obviously, it wasn't
working for them. This is attempt number 2. While there may be a common
ground somewhere, the old way apparently can't work.
Gotta hand it to them though, at least they haven't given up. Well see how
it goes for them, but I'd guess that their hands are tied to some extent.
*I would wager that the majority of their customers have already jumped on board and paid for 2.0 actually.

That's why you are not going to see the Modular Side of BW released in the near future, because they need it to keep on coming out with tools and features for the yearly cash flow license model.pekbro wrote:If you think about it, its really kind of a ballsy way of going about it.
Essentially, they are betting that they can provide enough interesting
content and features to make people want to continue to pay on a yearly
basis. That has to be the primary target of their business model.
In a way, for me, its kind of exciting to see what they could possibly come up
with to swing all that. I could see it happening if they are smart and continue
to push forward and open up the modularity ASAP.
Let the community help to grow Bitwig's worth. They should see this
as an method to naturally promote longevity (in marketing terms).

If the users get their hands on that Modular thing (Reaktor - M4L like) they can build their own and you can draw a simple conclusion.
Look at the new modulators for example, "new feature for sale", but if the user can make them out themselves with the Modular engine......

they could bring in other new stuff thats valuable for the update. The modular system is not everything in the world.

I don't agree, it should allow for 3rd party commercial extensions, a thriving amateur community etc. this can only lead to more dependence on the system. Bitwig simply has to use their code base advantage to come up with top tier stuff. Similar to what props does for Reason (theoretically)..liquidsound wrote: That's why you are not going to see the Modular Side of BW released in the near future, because they need it to keep on coming out with tools and features for the yearly cash flow license model.

Agreeing or not the Modular was a luring promise from the very beginning and then removed from BW site.pekbro wrote:I don't agree, it should allow for 3rd party commercial extensions, a thriving amateur community etc. this can only lead to more dependence on the system. Just an idea: put the license model on hold until the promised modularity has been implemented. Until then, all other updates and upgrades are complimentary.

It's not going to happen.
The modular section is the golden egg.
Give that away and there is very little to add to the program beside some workflow enhancements.
That's what happens when you copy rather then create.
You can improve, mutate, few aspects but the "seed" belongs to the original creator.
