In addition to founding Roland, he was one of the chief architects of the MIDI specification.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

They're going to design his boutique-size headstone in plastic with a monophonic epitaph and it'll be expensive.

Wow, sad news. What an amazing legacy!

The father of MIDI, of the TR-808 and of so much more. Thank you for your wonderful role in the world of electronic musical instruments.

The more I hang around at KVR the less music I make.

An age without samples is a brilliant read. Great mind lost.

Roland's technical heritage supports a substantial part of the music world today -- without it, most of us would probably not be on KVR one way or another. Despite never having used any Roland gear, the GM/GS specification was part of my musical "upbringing" almost. I wouldn't be playing (sampled) drums (over MIDI) today if I'd not tried to work out why Soundfonts were so bad... Of course, Ikutaro Kakehashi (and Roland)'s history in music and technology goes back years before that and continued in other areas long after.

A true musical force. RIP.

Not only gifted, but a good human being as evidenced when he facilitated the return of the Sequential brand name to Dave Smith (copy from Dave Smith instrument's site):

"Instrumental in restoring the Sequential name was Roland’s Founder, Ikutaro Kakehashi, a longtime colleague and friend of Smith’s. “I feel that it’s important to get rid of unnecessary conflict among electronic musical instrument companies,” said Kakehashi. “That is exactly the spirit of MIDI. For this reason, I personally recommended that the President of Yamaha, Mr. Nakata, return the rights to the Sequential name to Dave Smith."

Brilliant, pioneering man who shared his passion for music with us all.

ps, the excellent KVR interview with him from three weeks ago was very timely to say the least:

Interesting interview, and not only because of the content. And the timing (!)
A good example how to edit a really informative, tablet-age easy-to-read article. Great journalism! :tu:
