Thesys pattern sequencer -- number of pattern slots

The Thesys manual says, "The Pattern Sequencer plays up to 16 different patterns in any order" (page 27 of the English version). On the screen (lower right-hand corner) there are slots for 8 patterns rather than 16, and I can't figure out how to program more than 8. Is the manual wrong, or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance, and my apologies if this has already been discussed and I just couldn't find it.

I think what the manual really meant was "Each of the pattern sequencer's 8 steps can play one of the 16 patterns."
