Thanks.
Yeah, we plan to reset the trials.
Ok, thanks. :)

We don't support VST MIDI effects in the first release. Sorry!
Cue Ableguy1 and kmonkey in 3...2...1...

AH! Now I remembered why I dumped Reason after one day of demoing it. THAT alone is a dealbreaker.

Will Reason 9.5 support all VST plugins?
Reason’s VST implementation is based on VST 2.4. Any 2.4 compliant instrument or effect plugin (that’s just about every VST out there) will work in Reason.

What's worse, it's probably just a few lines of code to do it: save cursor position before playback to a variable, then when transport stop is detected, restore cursor position to the saved value. :/

Reason's a great program. I bought it at 7. But watching this guy eat his words is pretty sweet. They've had weird attitudes for years.
+1

Seems like an act of desperation. If PH had enabled RE transfers I think they may never have needed to do this. REs made Reason a cash black hole which led to many jumping ship a long time ago.

Funny. Just this morning, while jamming to my morning coffee, this tiny missing feature bugged the hell out of me. "DAMN IT. WHY?!?".

What i don't get from the video... is this some kind of VST wrapper inside of Reason, or is VST natively supported?

Post

This announcement is good news. For those that don't want to use vst, you don't have to and everything will still be just as stable as it was before vst. I am still on reason 6.5 but a version 10 release with new features, I would consider updating at that point. I am still waiting on step recording so I hope to see this in a version 10 next year.

Then midi chase so long notes will play middle of them, so annoying that you need to listen long notes always from the beggining. Takes so much unnecessary time, jesus. And automation curves, tensionline between the points, just like in FL. And mp3 export. But please add that automatically returning playing cursors and midi chase to 9.5 too. Big thank you!
Noted! We have a big backlog of stuff we want to do (of course) and it's always hard to prioritize (of course), but let me know what you really want to see and I'll take it into consideration!

We've implemented most of VST 2.4 , no wrapper tricks. :)

Thanks Anosou. :)

Actually, i wasn't too excited when i heard these news, but, the more i see of it now, the more i think it might be a good adition, and people will be thrilled about it. Especially as obviously the implementation allows to at least have some of the routing capabilities of Reason's native devices and RE's on board (according to what is possible with VST).

Well, if you read these messages on above, you can clearly see that this playing cursor doesn't return automatically on stop, is pretty damn annoying and many people hate it. It makes things frustrating. Shouldn't this type of problem be pretty high on to do list? Plus like its said, adding this should be just couplr lines of code. Easy and fast to add, yet it would male many people life much easier. I don't know your priorities, but to me, this should be top on the list to fix. People complain this all over the internert. So, win win, how it sounds? Plus if you add this and that midi chase feature, I promise you to that I will buy Reason. A new customer for you. Isn't that what you want, new customers. So add at least this to 9.5, please? Easy and fast to add

Wow..... Finally... And what a crappy way to announce it with that apologetic 9.5 video "were trying to enable people" etc... I see it as a major "damage control" video... They could have done more demonstration and less of the visionary jibberish. This is kind of a pandoras box for me... I've done the switch to Logic, still got my Reason 7 license. I don't really want to think about going back to reason now... In a sense it's more about trust for propellerhead at this point. I guess it will come down to seeing how the new owners will operate Reason in terms of updates, announcements etc. In any case, It feels like a victory in a sense (I know I was right all along) but also like a defeat since I've already moved on and wasted a lot of time in the process of switching from reason twice. Damn it that they managed to hold off for so damn long before caving in... Bittersweet....

Post

wow, I don't get the negativity in this thread... seems like great news if you like Reason, and if you don't, well.. don't use it.

for me, I've drifted away from Reason, and didn't bother upgrading (since 7) as it didn't seem to be going forward, but this is a good step forward, and I can imagine it was a non-trivial task (due to things like PDC).
I'm now quite tempted to upgrade (or perhaps wait for R10?).

I think that VST and REs can sit quite nicely together, RE's are a bit like 'native devices' in some other DAWs which integrate a little nicer than vsts, e.g. because they fit properly into the daws ui, rather than a separate window. so though I didn't buy into REs, I think they can still serve a useful purpose.

I think for REs to remain viable, PH need to reconsider the licensing/distribution of the RE api e.g. to allow for open source developers to produce REs (same with Rewire), the days of proprietary apis is over.. even Steinberg have made licencing open source compatible, PH need to follow suit.

anyway, this is good news for PH/Reason, I can imagine a lot of new users turning to reason now it will feel less like a closed ecosystem... I still find its UI quite compelling, and different from your average DAW.

p.s. if PH can now add MPE/multi channel midi, then I'm definitely in for an upgrade :)
