Funny how the topic turned into discussing non-Western modal music due to the claim that the software contains "ALL scales and modes in music"!

I never knew that these could start on one of the half-flat notes. That complicates this in terms of use in a virtual instrument for me. Although I'm not going to be doing authentic maqam or even close, just noting the complexity.
VSL has a few of 'em as presets, .scl files in their VI Pro interface (where you can choose 1 of the normal 12 as its '1')...
One of the reasons why I'm glad the Turks never adopted the Arabic 24-tone quarter tone system (which I understand wasn't that long ago - Bartok's time). Though, I imagine it would still be a complicating factor in terms of virtual instruments to use something like Turkish Segah, for example, as it has its tonal center a coma flat of the Western pitch.

Huh. I guess it could be a consequence of that. I don't get how that gained so much traction, it's antithetical to the whole though of Arabic intervals...

the wordage of the OP, 'scales and melodic patterns' made me think of Slonimsky's Thesaurus
