Hi guys

Maybe I am dong something wrong but after entering MIDI into a track and wanting to export the MIDI composition, I choose Export and render file and select as MIDI. It then renders and says finished but nowhere can I find the .mid file, even though I check the folder it is supposed to be in. If I select render as WAV, the resultant exports are there. I have pass through plugins selected and only selected track. Anyone got the same issue?

Any advice gratefully received.

Cheers

Andy

I dont know what os you are on but I have had the same experience on Linux.
I had to run Waveform as root and then it worked like a charm! Some kind of file permissions issue I would guess.

For MIDI make sure to un-check "Pass through plugins", as this can result in an empty MIDI file.

As far as the file location goes, make sure you set the desired file path in the render dialogue.

Thanks guys, found the unchecking of "Pass through plugins" did the trick for me. Again thanks for the advice.

There's also the new "Render Clip" -> "Render MIDI" options (also available from the "Render Track" button) to quickly render MIDI content to files (just delete the created clip afterwards and find the "*.mid" file in your Project's "Rendered" folder.

You'll still need to make sure that you disable "Pass Through Plugins" though to avoid them eating the MIDI content.

What if plug does something with the midi (like arp/seq), is this
"Pass through plugins"
intended for such case to be turned ON ? And does it work already in such case ?

Yes, in this case you should leave it on. This is why "Pass through plugins" is optional and not always off. But remember to mute any synths that may follow the MIDI modifier plugin as these could eat the MIDI data.

Would it make sense to have 'Export Points', a little bit like the existing Freeze Point, but which set an optional point for MIDI/Audio renders to be tapped out of, instead of the track 'output'?

in reaper is that every VSTI that output no midi the midi is route automatic to next slot midi in. same is done with audio. there can add several vsti and all play same notes and output audio. so can layer sounds easy. seem a special good trick how they do that. i know many vsti do not output the midi in, but have a midi out pin. same is with audio in pin and audio out pin. only trick can do when a VSTi have no audio in pin, the audio in can copy to next audio in slot

In kontakt it definitely dont work :( (all midi is activated in kontakt settings). Maybe cause kontakt is midi/instrument in one but there are so much good kontaktlibs with arps/sequencers inside, thats really :( . I have tried with INFUNDIBULUM, this one has inside opportunities but even if there are possibities to get the midi out in the lib would be much more comfortable if you have ONE way INSIDE waveform for all midi plug, would help a lot for a uniform workflow.

So would be great if you can have a look on kontakt if their might be a way to handle this.

EDIT: generally it seems to work :) , tried it with blue arp/octopus. I have to switch octopus OFF and then I get the arp from blue arp

This is a GREAT feature in my opinion :tu: (especially cause I HATE to have to do some midi recording for that kind of stuff) dont know if I am the only one who has just overseen it ? Otherwise might be someting for some more advanced vids about the midi pattern stuff (maybe with function update when it comes ?)

You can do all that with racks if you want to.

Basically if the midi gets to the output of the track, when you export the track, you'll end up with a midi file.
If the midi doesn't reach the output of the track, when you export, you'll get a blank midi file.

You're exporting the midi that gets to the output of the track. If a vst "uses" the midi, to play sound, and doesn't pass it through, to the output, there's nothing to export.

Sorry if I intrude, I also have a similar problem: I created midi files with a plugin and when I go to export to wav it doesn't export the sounds of midi, it only exports one. I read in this thread that disabling "Pass through plugins" fixes the problem is that I was unable to find this option, where can I find it? :(
