Hi all

Been having computer problems lately. Got a nasty bug that that wanted to format my HD whenever I plugged in my ethernet cord.

But it seemed like all my music apps worked fine. I was playing with Tracktion last night. Closed normally. Then today, it hung and hung on the INITIATING line. Tried several things.

1.Tried re-installing tracktion over the other install ( like usual when you get an update)

2.Used the repair file techique for XP, a 1 hour installation procedure.

3.Tried uninstalling Tracktion ( after saving my files)and re-installing it. Still NO GO.

4.I DID try letting it go for a long time when it was hanging on the INITIATING dialog. But after 1 hour, I knew it was not going to do it.

5.Tried installing Tracktion on another drive... No GO.

All my other apps work OK..eXT, Mini Host, and FL Studio. But my main workhorse is Tracktion.

Any suggestions..or could it be part of this bug? Is so..why are my other programs working?

AGGHGG..need help!..or..I'm going back to Atari! :-)

( actually..I still use my Atari's for certain algo-apps )

EDIT: I am on another computer right now,so thats why I can post :-)

Tim, post a double of this in hardware & give it a different name. Tracktion may be effected by whatever the actual problem is & not all the gear heads use Traktion, so someone who might have the answer might miss this post.

If tracktion is outright refusing to load there are three likely reasons:

1) something in your asio config/drivers is screwed as a result of your problems. It may be that other apps detected a driver change and adapted to the change. I had a problem with Tracktion getting itself set the the wrong ASIO device on my machine once, and I couldn't get into Tracktion to fix it as it would crash everytime it tried to open the drivers. The only fix was to trash the Tracktion config file, which leads me to...

2) the Tracktion configuration file is hosed, or contains settings that conflict with your system post 'issues'. Try deleting the config file. Simply reinstalling in this case wont fix it.

3) if it was a virus it may have infected a system dll file that Tracktion relies on that it just so happens none of your other hosts use (not as unlikely as it sounds). Only Jules could tell you which windows dlls Tracktion needs, so if you suspect this could be the case your best mileage will probably be in just getting up to date virus definitions andtrying to find out exactly which virus you had, and if there are any infected files/ manual fixes needing attention. I discovered Nimda (my only virus /worm infection on my home PC and I'm still pissed about it now) simply because MS Word quit working. Everything else seemed fine, but that one app just wouldn't open.

Maybe check the log file to see where it's getting hung up in a little more detail...

Hey..thanks for the replies. I had already tried the log file thing, but still no go.

Looks like I need to put XP fresh on the drive, reload all my programs, get a GOOD firewall program. Plan on getting the Macaffee suite that has the firewall. Might be a while, but it should work.

Zone Alarm is as good as most Windows commercial desktop software firewalls, and better than most. Plus, it's free for home use. Get it here;

I'd use it rather than McAfee or Norton's commercial offerings. Much less bloat-y.
"my gosh it's a friggin hardware"
