using .fxp files in MuLab

Hi,

I have downloaded the huge Yamaha TX16W sample library compilation called the Aeolian fxp (soniccharge.com/forum/topic/594-original-tx16w-library).

My problem is, I have never used .fxp files and don't understand how to load them!

According to the ReadMe file, I should:
1. Load an instance of Cyclone onto a track in your DAW, and maybe insert a splash of reverb after it.

2. set the track input to "MIDI:All Channels"

3. arm the track and turn monitoring on ...

4. import one of the .fxp files ... and play :)
But Magnus Lidström, the maker of Cyclone, wrote on the Cyclone forum:
Sorry, but Cyclone itself does not have a function to import .fxp files, you need to do it through your DAW.
So, how do I do this?

I use MuLab today. If I try to drag one of the .fxp files from the Preset library, I can't drop it on a new track or so. I have also installed both Cyclone and the TX16WX, and neither is accepting the .fxp files (or at least I haven't got them to do it).

So... how do I load the samples/fxp's?

I also asked in the Sampling forum on KVR if I should stick to Cyclone or use another VST (or perhaps MuSampla?). They said I can only use Cyclone for these. Is this correct? (I am not interested in the sampling capabilities, just after the sounds of this library, hence the question.)

Thanks a lot if you can clear this out for me!

Go MuLab!

Open the VST editor, then at the top of it there is a MuTools control bar and there are the buttons to open/save FXP / FXB files.

Ah, thanks.

Actually I did it correctly, but my audio driver had crashed, and because of that, Cyclone didn't load correctly (who knew!).

Now I have thousands of sounds from the eighties and nineties at my disposal. Wow!

(For others reading this thread, "VST editor" is not an editor in MuLab, but the VST instrument (= Cyclone)).

Thanks again, and thanks for this wonderfully musical DAW. Whenever I try another DAW, I jump back to MuLab within an hour or so and focus on making music instead. :)

It's also a great DAW for edcation, since it's so easy to make music with it and since MUX and especially MuDrums are so well integrated. The only thing I have felt missing is a rompler (as there are not so many acoustic-sounding sounds in MUX). Perhaps Cyclone + the Aeolian fxp can do the trick! :tu:

Thanks so much SparkySpark for the link to the Aeolian Collection! Those sounds are gorgeous in Cyclone.

Well, you're welcome! I'm always glad when I can help out. :)

FYI, I'm trying to set up a studio with "rompler sounds" but without Kontakt or other huge sample libraries, to work with MuLab - all to get as creative a workflow as possible. I'm now going with MUX and this collection obviously, but am also going to look into Swatches (free) from AAS, and Air Xpand 2 (not free). I also just noticed that Crystal (free) now has a GM-ish soundset (also free).

I used to work with Proteus VX (free) but I think it's not working under X64/Win10. E-MU X3 (not free) would be another option, but it's only available as warez nowadays I think.

As you see, I try to make this setup as inexpensively as possible (also for the benefit of my students).

FYI, your students can map their own sfz using Versilian's free SFZConverter; and their free Versilian Community Orchestra comes in sizes from 100MB to 3GB; and the free bigcat and bandshed sfz instruments also come in many sizes.

Thanks!

I just looked that these links and they will be great for (true) orchestra sounds.

Thanks again!

Single orchestral samples are also easy to add effects and layer in MuPad, MuSampla and MuSynth because they have a 'clean' waveform and are tuned.

Ah great. Very smart - that might give some synths a fuller sound. Right now I'm doing an Erasure-ish song (with octava bass and all), so MUX rocks all by itself just now. :)
