What if Props now made Thor available as a standalone VST that could be used in any DAW?
I mean, one of the draws of Reason without VST compatabilty, was the power of Thor.
But now maybe Thor can be freed, and used on in any DAW, not just iOS.

I'd love if a new version of Reason allowed using the Reason synths as plugins in other hosts but I don't see it happening.

You'll get no objections from me - I totally agree. Why it's not supported "officially" is beyond me, though it would also be nice if Malstrom could sample it's own graintables and NNXT was updated to be more like Kontakt (scripts, time strech on the fly, etc). Hopefully by Reason 20, then?bmrzycki wrote:I consider it somewhat interesting but in my opinion Props need to be the ones that implement real, supported, poly-note cabling.

If they could make a VST version of Thor and sell it an affordable price (less than $99), I think Props could strike one back at the VST world.

One of the biggest recurring complaints one reads from the VST-camp is that Reason's native synths sound "thin" or have "that Reason sound". I'm not sure if offering any of them as standalone VST for other DAW would be of any worth to those sort, do you?Jace-BeOS wrote:I'd love if a new version of Reason allowed using the Reason synths as plugins in other hosts but I don't see it happening.
Mind you, I'm not opposed to the idea - but like Jace-BeOS, I don't see it happening.

Any review I have read of Reason, is that Thor gets accolade as one of the best semi-modulars out there.EnochLight wrote:One of the biggest recurring complaints one reads from the VST-camp is that Reason's native synths sound "thin" or have "that Reason sound". NN-XT would also be an excellent standalone VST sampler.

What is poly-note cabling?

It's still a fantastic synth, IMHO, even at 10 years old.Numanoid wrote:Any review I have read of Reason, is that Thor gets accolade as one of the best semi-modulars out there.
Compared to Kontakt??! I dunno man.. NNXT has no scripting, no time stretch on the fly, and no built in effects. It's a fancy sampler based on 1993 hardware, IMHO.Numanoid wrote:NN-XT would also be an excellent standalone VST sampler.

No, I was thinking more in the "old-skool" sense of sampler/sample players that have come into vogue of late like TAL-Sampler.EnochLight wrote:Compared to Kontakt??! I dunno man.. - https://forum.reasontalk.com/viewtopic. ... 07#p218313For anyone who isn't aware of what exactly PolyCV adds:
The default Note + Gate CV connections in Reason allow an instrument to play a note at a specific velocity. Additional notes can be added after the first one is started. It may also be possible to have those additional notes be at a different velocity than the first, if the person coding the instrument pays special attention. But what can't happen is any note be stopped before another. Setting the gate to 0 stops all notes at the same time.
With PolyCV all of the above is possible, and each additional note can definitely be at a different velocity than the first. But there's the added feature that any note can be dropped from those being played at while still keeping the rest sounding.
PolyCV still uses only two cables. It doesn't even require special jacks on the receiving instrument, as specially encoded data is sent on occasion telling the instrument to expect PolyCV. The only thing that would have been nice, but would have complicated things more, is a way for the instrument to tell the sending device that it supports PolyCV. (Like a return CV cable, for a 2-way handshake.) As it is now, you have to manually tell the sending device to use PolyCV, and if the receiver doesn't support it, you'll get unpredictable results.

Fair enough. And I guess a VST port would also bring 15 years of patch libraries with NNXT, though admittedly the vast majority of decent ones (read: almost all) have been Combinators since Reason 3.0.Numanoid wrote:No, I was thinking more in the "old-skool" sense of sampler/sample players that have come into vogue of late like TAL-Sampler.

I started making music on Reason a long time ago (2.5). This makes me want to revisit it, maybe it could a viable DAW for me again.

Pure speculation on my behalf but I think this is pretty much what will happen. Minus the virtual MIDI cable as REs will likely use the player approach.bmrzycki wrote:What I really hope happens is reason gets a virtual midi cable to support poly note routing. then the players can be promoted to poly utilities and RE devs can start making poly note rack extensions.

so the only way currently to achieve chord chopping and make some voice distribution is the MoPol Polyphonic CV Merger (video at .02 can be seen that the three voices were merged into one and was routed to the Combinator)Rappo Clappo wrote:@xbitz

without it Combinators can be driven only from their own track,
yepp Reason definitely needs some "virtual MIDI cable" solution, MoPol is only a workaround hack
