I don't think he's overrated personally. It's nice that he actually sticks out as having a pretty much unmistakable personality in his sound - it's there whether he's doing drone or gabba. There's so much rubbish in electronica - especially these days - copyist stuff by folks not nearly as talented. I don't always like what he does but I think he generally deserves to be where he is as an artist.chk071 wrote:Aphex Twin never was my cup of tea. His music always appeared quite depressed, and somehow "autistic" (i think he stated himself that he's a bit autistic) to me. Very creative guy, but, IMO, a bit overrated. One or two tracks from his Selected Ambient Works albums aren't bad really. But, rather something i'd listen to when i had a really, really bad day. And even then, i'd rather need something to cheer me up.
I loved SAW Vol1 and Polygon Window when they came out. I also played the Richard D James album to death. Classics was a good collection as was the Caustic Window album. All good stuff. After this point he seemed to focus more on the piss taking side of his music which seems to have stayed ever since. Having said that I really enjoyed The Tuss ep.
Analord is worth mentioning as it was just so mediocre and pretty darn bad in places. It's like he was going through the 'Jazz Odyssey' stage of his career lol.

I love his drill and bass shit, his ambient shit does nothing for me at all.
Him, Squarepusher and Autechre are what got me into electronica in the 90s when I got bored of guitar music

Only Autechre's stayed with me. I don't rate Squarepusher at all really - not in the same league imo.VariKusBrainZ wrote:I love his drill and bass shit, his ambient shit does nothing for me at all.

In addition to being labeled Techno Mozart in the early 90's, another things the music press loved to state about our Richard was that he only slept two hours per night, released tracks under a lot of monikers (even if he used soit pp only once), did "one take techno" (whatever that is, press record/play on tape? ), made his own instruments (ciruit modding Spectrum computers), rode a tank, and composed in a vault.chk071 wrote:Aphex Twin never was my cup of tea.
