Ive downloaded over 300gb of MP3's over the years.. filtered through a lot of absolute shite and here is my premium selection that I recommend to start with. I recently purchased a lot of it.
This is not the cheesey crap with rompler piano and waterfall noises:

Steve Roach. Classic ambient. This dude lives in the Arizona desert, been making ambient since the 80's. Top producer.

Heres one of my favourites of his albums:

Vir Unis. Abstract pulse ambient, very unique.

He releases with other artists at this independent label: http://www.atmoworks.com

Robert Rich. This guy has a 40+ module MOTM modular synth. Extremely beautiful organic sounding compositions.
Samples of his latest work here: http://www.robertrich.com/rrbestiary.html

Carbon Based Lifeforms. Best chilled ambient/trance I've ever heard.

Woob. This guy is a genius. His albums 1194 and 4495 are true classics. AKA Journeyman.

Also Vladislav Delay as mentioned by jdg.

And finally.. an excellent selection is released or available through Ultimae Records: http://www.ultimae.com

Godspeed You Black Emperor have done some amazingly ambient stuff.

VidnaObmana.
His early (1) CDs are a bit new-age-y to my taste (2), but the Dante Trilogy is very nice and very dark.
Collaborated with Steve Roach, Robert Rich and Asmus Tietchens among others.

Groet, Erik

(1) his really early work isn't new-age-y at all. Oh no.
(2) the bits I heard, anyway.

Another fine presentation of Ambient is every sunday night (sunday morning for Europeans) broadcasted live through the internet.

Starsend is the name of the radio show that will bring 5 hours of eclectic ambient music, broadcasted from Pensylvania from I think 1 AM Eastern American time.

Great inspirational music :D

There are some really talented Ambient artists over at http://www.spottedpeccary.com One album in particular that I bought recently is by an artist David Helping, 'Sleeping On The Edge Of The World'. A very modern Ambient work. Very interesting EFX, moody, deep. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for all the input!

I went to 3 stores today -- couldn't find a damn thing...But, I earned a $10 gift certificate from BN.com, so I am placing an order for Lifeforms and Beautiful World to start.

Another tip:
Dutch radio-station KinkFM has a show called X-Rated. Ambient, noise, &c. Great stuff, and a webcast, too. Every sunday from 21:00 Central European Time.
Two years ago, they released a compilation called X-Rated The Electronic Files. Still for sale, or so it would seem.
Featuring Coil, VidnaObmana, Kim Cascone, Tangerine Dream, &c., &c.

3 hours, 21:00-00:00.
Cable only, but for the cable impaired (and international listeners) there is a webcast. Link at the top of the page.
