Hey I was wondering how do you do this with Melda plugins?
Sounding just exactly what I am missing from my mixes!

Here is a video

Maybe a bit of saturated highs?

Thanks!

Pretty sure there's a preset for that in MXXX. Or there was, anyway. Do a search in MXXX for Dolby. (Although if I remember correctly that preset makes a mistake in how it treats the upper band. I think the actual hardware mixes a new, parallel upper band in with the full signal but the preset doesn't. So the preset doesn't give the same kind of phase cancellation at the top end of the spectrum. Not 100% sure about that as it was a year or two ago that I was looking into it.)

I have a Dolby preset i made. I will try to send it over when i return from holiday.

How about

Just the default bass & air active preset. Not sure if it is the some, but it's awesome :).

Thanks guys,

Vojtech yes pretty pretty close, if not the same!

I inspired by that preset and did a custom MXXX version.
It contains also a side comrpessed signal

Here is the preset:

I call it Dolby exciter!
Also contains some bass excitement
, and I find it pretty useful.

Just click the download arrow icon on top right! and import it
Let me know what you think

I have an impulse response for a Dolby unit. You could add it to your preset. Let me know.....

Hey man that would be wonderful!
I don't know though what to do with the impulse, where do you put it?
Thanks!!

Inside convolution. It will simulate the hardware. I will get it over to you soon.

But what you are missing with the convolution is the compression of the hi-frequency.
When I was based at Red Bus Studios in London I had Pete the tech hang a cable out of a dolby unit that was just connected to the output of the encoded hi-frequency section. I then put it through a 7-10ms delay.
Convolution wont work the signal has to be compressed otherwise you are just getting the EQ.
Also you may need to put a gate after it to get rid of noises.

I wasn't suggesting the convolution on it's own, rather in addition to the existing processing. Sounds like your in the know regarding this particular effect. Maybe you could help us with the preset? The IR i have is just the sound of the hardware when idle (no processing) so it hopefully will add to the overall sound.

You can recreate the effect by Hi-passing the signal then taking the result and compressing the shit out of it then delaying it and then gating it.
This is used on an fx send.
I just fiddled with the hipass frequency till I got some thing I liked.
Try this setup, Uses 4 Plugins. open text file and just paste in settings to each plugin in the order they are set.

It might also be a good idea to try and get a printout of the dolby hi-frequency curve and emulate it with the filter.
I did not go that far.
There is also some documentation somewhere of the compression used.
Probably we should try and create it exactly.

What does the gate do? I'm away from the studio so can't check right now.
Jason @ Melda Production

Because you are amplifying and compressing the top end you can get noise in the gaps.
So use an expander or gate.

On further recollection we actually used the top 2 bands of the CAT22A.
From the manual Band 3 starts at 3k.
It also states that the compression is 2:1.
So with a bit more juggling we should be able to get very close using the 4 plugins.
Maybe in MXXX.
