There was a post/email about this. They got rid of all of the predefined bundles because they came to the conclusion that people preferred creating their own bundles. Indeed, we prefer creating our own bundles where we can exploit the $9 plugins to get a good discount on the more expensive plugins.

Of course, people like those bundles just fine, as long as they're cheap enough; they weren't.

More power to them, but I value their plugins at the prices that I've been paying for them and that largely requires the $9 plugin trick in order to them low enough.

The $9 plugin trick does not work anymore. $9 plugins are excluded from the bundle discount now.

Yes, I know, I was the first to post about that, in this thread even, that was my point. I'm basically saying that if they want my money they will either have to reduce the price of their plugins, or allow the $9 plugin trick. Otherwise, I'll just give it to someone else instead.

Hobbyists don't NEED any plugins, we just want them because they're fun. So there are an endless variety of choices and the vendors who provide the best value move to the head of the line to soak up available discretionary income.

You nailed it on the head. Right now the competition for our money is between PA, Waves, and IK.

I've noticed most of those flame wars are not him starting them. I realize he may start them on other threads, but there are a few that follow him over here and make nasty cracks which are not necessary and appear to just be carry over from somewhere else on this forum because they really have nothing to do with the subject. I wish they would keep it to the other threads.

On the other hand, I don't buy as much when he isn't around. Much better for my wallet.....

This is not just specific to Plugin Alliance but to the general point of affordability... many of us have a load of variations on the same emulation.

I can guarantee I won't be spending $199 + for another compressor or EQ (thank you UA but your time has passed for me - except where you do new things like the excellent MOOG XL). So what i look for now is improved work flow/design and innovation (the nebula stuff might pry some cash out of me given the technology behind it).

I am surprised that more vendors don't offer cross grades for that reason. I would be inclined to add to the collection if the vendor would provide a discout for a competitor crossgrade option but these are very rare now and were at one point quite common.

Post

I mostly see the crossgrades with DAWs, not so much for plugins. And it is the only reason I have Studio One.

And though I wish some of these companies would have pricing structures similar to Reaper (are you making money with our DAW? then you pay more), I understand it would be way to hard to control. So us hobbyists have to pay the same, which does limit what I buy and when I buy.

Exactly. All of the above.

I'm a value buyer. If the discount isn't deep enough I pass. I have WAY WAY too many plugins already. I have 300 on my ilok alone and that is probably only 1/3rd of what I own. I don't NEED anymore stuff. I only want it because it's fun. So I agree that vendors now need to offer crossgrades for us enthusiasts/hobbyists to make it worth it. Or high dollar coupon offers. Or bundle offers, etc.

I'm actually about to probably put a stop to all my spending as I'm not paying top dollar for anything new anymore.

I'd still like to buy Fab Filter's products but their discounts are never enough. Same for Positive Grid. Same for Oxford even at 50% off. Propellerheads, U-he, and Lush, UVI, Spitfire, UAD and others I'm sure I'm forgetting. All great stuff. Top quality even. But nowadays I already have stuff as good from other companies.

And I totally agree on the UAD stuff. Over. Priced. Won't. Buy. It. Any. More.

They really need to put their plugins at $50 for the majority of them and $99 for the bigger ones. And still offer discount coupons. I've got an Apollo Twin Duo and a bunch of plugins already. But am starting to see that I don't want to be tied to their platform's limited DSP as the years go by and CPUs continue to climb in native power and ram. So I now buy all my plugins as native. And only buy UAD when it is something exclusive or special and they've offered a $50 coupon to bring it down to reasonable levels.

One thing I think these plugin vendors forget is that their stuff ISN'T HARDWARE! Jeesh guys. Hardware is at least physical and too time and materials to produce each one. So paying $200+ makes some sense. But paying $100+ for a plugin anymore is looking more and more foolish to me. It's gotta be something major to bother. A breakthrough no one else can do yet and even then...

Their new SSL Channel Strip MK2 is amazing. I bought their API 2500 and am actually regretting it so I'm skipping the SSL Buss Compressor MK2, they can't seem to get feedforward VCA compressors right.
I am surprised that more vendors don't offer cross grades for that reason.
IK offers crossgrades from their own products. Dealers get to sell them, too, so the prices can end up being even lower.

u-he's dinosaur crossgrade is probably the best way to do it, customers get a discount and u-he gets some very good promotion out of it.

Almost certain that I don't need Waves L2 (I've IK Stealth Limiter and PSP Xenon). But GAS is itching.

Then again, FabFilter is out of this world. Like Zynaptiq.
