Get your EQ bands moving on the other hand, and you can alter timbre radically. The filter in your synth is essentially an EQ at the end of the day, moreover it's (usually) a polyphonic EQ. Set up your synth with a band reject filter + full keytracking and you've got, in essence, an EQ that always EQs out the same part of the spectrum in proportion with the note being played.
