I've just heard about this scheme for Xfer's Serum.

https://splice.com/plugins/15493-serum- ... er-records

I wonder if Lennar Digital might consider something similar?

Post

Well, I'd really wish more plugins had the options to buy following this path, but it really depends on the company.

I just did a search and noticed Lennard brought the subject up here....

...so at least he's considering it.

Not sure I got how that works. Say, you only need the plugin for two months. You pay 20 bucks and then the license gets canceled? While that might be an interesting concept for a new product, it might seem a bit unfair regarding existing products, for which existing customers have already paid the full price.
Wouldn't most people quit the plan before the full full price is paid? I.e. would enough people still actually buy the product entirely?
Then again, it might end the excessive resale on KVR and elsewhere as people would not feel like they have a lot of dead capital in their folder and thus try to sell it.

Well, you are still paying 20$ for two months of use, and you cannot use it while you are not paying. I'll happily pay the full price, it's a lot of months (I've considered even the company Splice going out of business before I can finish the payment) but it's worth it. And I don't really think is unfair. I have to pay a price for renting it instead of buying it directly (189€ is not so much, really): online DRM each 2 or 3 days, which is a bit of a PITA since my studio computer usually is offline, and the fact that if I don't have enough money to pay a month of it, I cannot use it until I have the money. The direct buyers can use Serum offline forever. Fair enough, I think :)

It would probably also nearly end the cracks problem overnight. Ten bucks enough? You've got to be unusually motivated to resort to warez to avoid paying that.

If you only need it for 2 months then you pay $20. From their website....
Cancel your plan at any time, no questions asked. Resume your plan to pick up right where you left off.
So you don't land back at square one if you cancel/take a break. All your instalments add up towards the full price.

Depends on the person - I'd be interested to find out what proportion of those who bought Serum via this scheme completed their purchase compared to those who cancelled part-way through.

Either way the developer is getting paid - and the software is now within reach of those who may not be able to stretch to full price in one go.

I already bought a license. But I would probably have earlier with rent-to-own.
The resistance to do that is much lower than paying the entire sum, because you have time to reconsider and you don't have to pay more in total.

You can purchase Sylenth1 and pay in monthly installments of only €9.95 Euro, until the full amount has been reached. We will send your license within minutes after the first payment is received, so you can start using Sylenth1 right away!

The subscription can be paused or suspended any time you like, but that'll also deactivate your license (until the subscription is re-enabled). When you have paid all installments, the subscription stops and you keep the full license!

They warez freeware ffs, how is a rental scheme going to end cracks?

Does this subscription license system need internet access? My studio computer is offline but I'd like to try this...

Post

I'm pretty sure that you'll have to keep the Splice client running, whenever you run Sylenth1. So, ya, that probably means that you need an active internet connection, because how would the client otherwise be able to check if your subscription is active or not?

Or am i totally wrong, and this does NOT use Splice? I can't really find an option to rent Sylenth1 on the Splice website.

Great to see you're giving this a shot Lennard! I already own a full license, but I definitely would have bought one way sooner if this plan had been around. I hope it brings you lots of new business!

I've tried the Serum plan and it works as you described, but Sylenth1 does not seem to be related to Splice. If I click purchase and go through the different pages, eventually I get to a PayPal subscription page.

Yeah, seems to have nothing to do with Splice, sorry for the confusion. Seems like Lennard figured out a own system.
