Ok, regardless of how many times i asked any developers to create ways to get rid of the mouse which injures hand and brain they never helped. Why? Probably because they are asked to support mouse building industry. Generally if your mouse lies on the table it can be tolerable but if your table is occupied by a midi keyboard you have no space for the mouse and i had to have a second chair by my side to put the mouse there and as a result my hand was almost all the time bended 90 degrees to the forearm. As a result of that torture my little finger has become kind of weak and unresposive which damaged my technique. So i was searching the way to alleviate that pain and get rid of the mouse completely and finally i have found it and want to share my experience with other musicians. So you need to install the program Enable viacam, connect a usb webcam to the pc and start enable viacam. Go through the automatic setting up using the wizard automatically launched at the first start of Enable viacam. Later you can modify the settings to your taste. As for me i have increased the vertical speedup, and put threashold to 2 instead of 1. The program also suggests using automatic clicks. You better turn that feature OFF because you can start getting clicks when you don't want it. So now you can move the cursor by moving your head. It will take some time to achieve smooth and precise poiting but the program is nice. Before i had tested another program cameramouse and that is complete crap and don't use that. So now you can move the cursor but what about clicks? By some strange reason the program in question has no option to set shortcuts for mouse clicks. So i had to activate those shortcuts using builtin windows means. So press alt-shift-numlock and press ok to enable movements of mouse with the numerical pad. Now you can use numpad button 5 for a single click, + button for double click, - 5 for right click. You may also want to know how to select a text for a example in a browser. You use + ie double click to select a word. If you want to select a larger block of text hold Shift while pressing +.

Anyway you will still need the mouse for some subtle movements like drawing automation lines. But for pressing buttons and selecting tracks or filters now you can use my method and enjoy.

I think the mouse was a FANTASTIC invention and I LOVE them. I've been using them for more than 30 years and they're like an extension to my arm. If your music keyboard is in the way, use a better location for the mouse. Pile some books up next to the computer keyboard or something. Try being inventive.

"Probably because they are asked to support mouse building industry." ??????????????????????? I assume that's attempted wit.

I disagree with you on this matter. I know only one group of developers who optimize their software for mouseless operation, they are developers of denemo score editing program. There is no much progress in the field of hw to replace the mouse. The projects i have seen are not impressive or too costly. And i dislike mouse for the very reason that you have to hold smth in the hand. Instead you can waive the finger in the air. Cameramouse program can be set to track the finger tip but if you put the finger out of the camera's view it can no longer catch the finger. That program has a potential but no longer developed. Another program commodio qpointer has disappeared from the internet. Very boring, no progress at all. Only some crap like smartphones and other tracking devices. Enableviewcam has the fault that it fails to track the head if there is a high contrast like if you are sitting near the window. And i would recommend avoiding using microsoft's mouse emulation by keyboard because cursor moves too slowly. Instead i use now http://rhdesigns.browseto.org/mouseemulator.html

Oh well, you're quite entitled to have your own preferences. I hope something satisfactory turns up for you.

I could put a pile of books under the mouse but it's not the right way. Also it takes much space and restricts movements by the piano. I am enjoying using both Enablewebcam + mouseemulator. Mouseemulator has one great feautre ie keys 7 and 9 allow to scroll down\up notes of the selected clip. Key 1 is left click which also works like holding left button of the mouse and double click works also. 2 is right click, 3 middle button. 4,8,5,6 to move the cursor. This small utility is used for clicking or subtle movement of the cursor and enableviewcam for large movements only. I disable it at day because of too strong light from the windows and high contrast which render it useless. It will take time to get accustomed to the new mouseless way but during training you will learn most key shortcuts. I have further optimized the builtin working preset for fast work.

Good idea about trackball built in keyboard. So far I have returned to a mouse because those ways i decribed above are not convenient for subtle movements

I am not a a fan of using a mouse for editing/drawing either.

That's why I got a Wacom Touch. I have it sitting on top of my midi keyboard. It can do everything(*) the mouse does, with the same precision.

(*) except for right-click dragging.

IMO it makes for a very realistic experience turning dials and sliders etc. :)

Can you give a link to the model you use?

So really it was your choice to work in an unsuitable environment, nothing to do with the inherant design of the mouse just the way you choose to use it.

Blame the tool lol

Little graphic pads such as the Wacom Bamboo are useful and cab double as an X/Y midi controller
