Collective 1.0.9 : "Contacting marketplace" [fixed in 1.1.0]

I have mentioned that in the "silence" thread, but I do not see that other have the problem. So may me that is something in my setup.

Ubuntu 16.04, latest updates:
Collective:
1.0.6 - GUI opens fast
1.0.8 - GUI opens slow
1.0.9 - GUI opens fast, but "Contacting marketplace" appears EVERY time I open GUI

Should I check some file permission (which one)?

I do not like when network unrelated programs "contact" something. Is there an option to turn off all network operations (from Collective and Waveform)?

i had this also reported 2 weeks ago without any response.
Collective 1.0.9 and BioTek 1.5.9 are now not usable without internet connection and i'm wondering why they have not checked this before beta was released ??

sounds like real-time activity auditing to me. that would explain the requirement for internet connectivity to be constant during use.

The panel showing "checking for updates" every time the UI loads is a bug and will be fixed in the next update.
There is no way to turn off the check for updates feature but it shouldn't be intrusive and the check runs on a low priority background thread. This is the only thing that Collective contacts the internet for.

That is a bad news... For me not optional checking for updates overweight many unique and brilliant ideals in Tracktion software. If that is for anti-piracy, in background and once per month, I can understand. For any other intention, that is pointless: A DAW is not an Antivirus and it can not suffer from "security vulnerabilities".

If after fixing the bug it will really "fail silently", there is no problem.

But for the moment, AppArmored Waveform (with deny network inet):
* works fine by itself
* Collective 1.0.6 GUI works fast and without delay
* Collective 1.0.8 GUI shows "Login with your Marketplace account..." which can not be canceled, but it is possible to exit GUI and Waveform normally
* Collective 1.0.9 GUI "hangs", without a possibility to close it (nor Waveform)

I guess I have to try IPTables instead

Worth a try however,, some copy protection schemes actively look for a connection to the internet before allowing the user to access the features on their DAW .

this scheme may serve two purposes.

1) updates can be pushed to the user without having to manually check for updates.

2) by requiring a constant live connection to the internet,
it is more difficult ( but not completely impossible) for a user to run multiple copies of a product simultaneously on different machines under a single use licence.

My opinion of that scheme is don't buy software that requires an active connection. Many folks use offline DAWs to prevent unwanted updates from disrupting a session, or adding DPC load on the CPU. Some wifi adapters are known to interfere with audio performance.

Once a software is authorized on a machine (either online or offline activation), it should stay that way. No legitimate reason to verify with each use.

Any other scheme should land a company on a blacklist.

A point which I totally agree with, imagine the furore that would ensue if, every time you switched on your hi fi or whatever, you had to log the session with the manufacturer. I don't think sales would be very good.
Now if waveform is gong the way of requiring a constant connection to use the software,( and I hope that's not the case). then I will definitely start looking elsewhere.

I'm beginning to wonder it Tracktion have lost their focus and are going for the bundle as many features as you can as fast as possible. mentality.( but that's slightly straying from the topic of this thread, oopsie).

Can I just state for the record that no Tracktion software requires an always-on internet connection. On the contrary, we provide offline authorisation for all of our products for machines that are not connected to the internet.

Our software checks for updates at startup to ensure everyone is notified of the most recent version so they have a chance to be up to date with the latest bug fixes and features. Every update can be easily ignored with one button and you will no longer be prompted for this version. Our full public releases are not that frequent that this should become annoying.
