By better than, I mean more kit pieces, whole kits, loops etc.

Or is SD merely an alternative to BFD3?

extremely similar. SD3 has more mic positions and built in drum replacement. But, that just came out. They both have a lot of content available. They both sound great. They both have options for dry to wet/processed kits. I don't think you can make a bad choice. I use BFD3. But, spend time in other peoples studios who use SD2. I'd take BFD3 over SD2. But, mostly because I like the kits better. I haven't heard or messed with SD3, so can't comment on its new stuff.

Another plus for BFD3 is that you can get 3rd party kits as well. Platinum Samples and Drumdrops both sell excellent kits for it. But SD 2 (3) you have to go with what TT offers.

Nothing is better than BFD3.

There are 7 kits, around 120 pieces. Lots of variety there. Does SD have modeled cymbal swell and splash with total control? If not, it's not as good.

yeah that's the problem with this question. I like the sound of BFD3 better in general. But, I don't think either is a bad choice. Hell Addictive Drummer has some pretty good sounding drums too. Too many awesome choices sometimes.

Recently I bought Sabian Digital Vault (a BFD2-era product but no problem) significantly reduced price which is unbelievably rich.

BFD3's Core Library is vastly superior to the one in BFD2. Some of it is pretty exotic, which is my tastes particularly in cymbals. The cymbal swells and splashes modeling and control is major, for realism; it used to take far more work to get the totally convincing cymbal rolls and now there is splash - NB: incl. for hihats - which is another advancement. But the swells itself gives a result that was heretofore just not going to happen. I used to have to use VSL with the whole roll sampled for certain things.

BFD3 is a DAW capable of everything hiding inside a virtual instrument. The selection of 3rd party content is big enough to suit whatever genre you may need.

is Superior Drummer better than BFD3?
