Spectral settings - resolution?

The buffer size in spectral effects is pretty common and obviously lets you choose between time and frequency accuracy. But the 'resolution' setting is unique to Melda plugins and I'm still unclear as to how it interacts with the buffer setting. Does anyone have any understanding other than subjective observations (which I can do myself :D )

I'm used to a 'window overlap' setting in spectral effects, which can help to improve the quality, is resolution the same as this? If not, I'd love to get an additional 'overlap' setting... or anything else that can help tailor the spectral controls.

Also... I'm still hoping Vojtech finds time for a multi-buffer option, where lower frequencies are processed by higher buffer settings and higher frequencies for lower buffers... the best of both worlds! I know he's worried about CPU usage but my CPU is ready to take on the challenge and an 'offline only' option would suffice for me too!

Would 'window overlap' be similar to Ratio? (Comparing spectral and audio gets tricky, especially before my first cup of coffee!)

For your multi-buffer concept, why not use a traditional crossover on your signal before it enters the spectral processing phase? What does your proposed signal path look like?

(once again...pre-coffee questions, forgive me)

I don't know what you mean by ratio, but I can't think how it could be similar to overlap... Which I believe simply overlaps and crossfades the spectral blocks for a smoother sound.

The multi resolution thing, yeah up to now I've been using a traditional crossover but I'm shooting in the dark as to the optimal frequency placement and spectral settings. Vojtech has said in the past that The super resolution mode (or whatever it's called, I forget the name) in the spectral analyzers takes this approach so he's already utilized it with that, I'm just hoping he can do that with audio processing too, but he worried about cpu... I'm hoping we can get it now as it was a while ago, or at least offline only.

I would vote to see this too. Even if just offline.

I was trying to compare Ratio in MXXX to overlap. In my coffeeless state, I was imagining its graphics presentation literally controlling the amount of overlap within the spectral separation. Should have visited the coffee before the keyboard!

Where do I find that?

MMorph and MTransformer (and some others?) have the 'spectral settings' minimized by default, but you should see 'spectral settings' shown in the Edit panel.

In Spectral Dynamics it's called 'quality' and is low/med/high, i'm not sure what the buffer size is for those settings (would be easy to find out) but i suspect 1024, 2048 and 4096.

For the spectral crossover it's called 'spectral resolution'. Oddly it's a continuous slider rather than an explicit selector... so I'm not sure how it works.

Personally I think it should be consistent cross all implementations, but that's really a different discussion and I'm kind of indifferent to it.

The resolution is indeed the overlap size (maybe something more too, but mainly that :D ).
