I've been making presets for MTurboDelay, but thought I'd ask for advice and show what I've been working on. I put time stamps on the side so you can fast forward to the parts you want to see. Feedback is appreciated.

Post

I'm also doing presets for MTurboDelay. So far I have successfully submitted 7 with another 3 in the pipeline.

So you want feedback? OK I will talk about each preset that you've done and then maybe make some general comments.

BBD. Has a nice tone to it. I do really like the soft sound. Out of interest, how closely does it emulate Bucket Brigade? Could it be further tuned to copy it more? If your emulating old gear, did you use TurboEQ for example or a clean digital EQ? Some of the parameters seem very modern for an old delay. Maybe consider stripping back some of the advanced features like shuffle etc and add some more control over the character and tone. Main thing though is it sound good in its default state.

Digital. I love the reverse feature and the ability to change the reverse length, nice touch! Also a fan of the styles up top, its great to be able to dial in delay settings and the switch through the styles to see which sounds best. Cool the way they digitally degrade in quality from left to right. Would like to hear the ducking feature (not in the video) and also play around with diffusion more, so I cant comment on those too much.

Tape. Like the sound. The wow and flutter and tape age sound good. Like the blue red and yellow styles too. Personally I think the drive control doesn't belong up top in global, i would move it down in the colour section, as its part of the tape personality. I assume its a tape saturation? Also again what kind of EQ did you use? Again I'm not keen on having the modern controls here. Like old tape machines didn't have sync. Be true to the original limitations of the tape delay, as often the limitations lead to creativity. After all if the user really wants to dial in a musical value for the delay parameter they can by clicking then selecting from the synced values.
Is there anyway you can add more tape options like IPS or head gap or different encoder/decoders? just ideas but i would concentrate more on getting it all about tape, rather than a tape with modern controls.

Multitap. Useful delay to have in the toolbox, however can be sometimes overwhelming to have 8 separate delays to contend with at one time. Would be nice if you took some of the hard work out of getting a nice sound out of this thing. Some ideas: Maybe a preset/style selector at the top that will dial in some values for the parameters, users can then go and modify the parameters further if they want. Or, maybe some global macro type controls that change groups of parameters with just one knob. Just thinking of way to make it easier and quicker, as it is such a flexible delay that some help or starting points would be useful.
I'm really liking the autoswell feature that is very cool!

Room. I have to be honest here, it just sounds like reverb.

Nebula. Looks very cool. Sounds interesting I would like to have a play around with it.

Envelope. Looks good again, nicely feature packed. I think you forgot to show off the envelope feature or i missed it, not really sure what it does. The filter sounded great and i did like the soft electric piano type sound. In this preset you have the drive down in the colour section, that is where it should be (in my opinion) so why have in in global on the other preset?

Overall impression is that your presets are intuitively laid out. They look easy to use and thing seem to be where i would expect them to be. There is also good separation of features and a consistency between the presets.
Small criticism is the colours of the knobs don't follow Melda defaults.
Red = Distortion/Limiting
Orange = Dynamics
Yellow = Reverb/Time/Delay
Green = EQ/Filter/Frequency
Blue = Modulation
Magenta (pink/purple) = Spectral/Pitch
Cyan = Stereo/width

These colours can help the user quickly and intuitively identify what type of effect the parameter will have.

All round good job, I would definitely use some of these if they were in TurboDelay.

What would I like to see?
Something crazy! that's sounds like nothing else. I would like to see something futuristic maybe controlled by XY pads.
Think spectral delay with granular, reverb, and glitching! That would be fun for me.

Nice video thanks for sharing.

Great demo. You touched on the basics of the presets while allowing us to do the deep exploring once it comes out. Very good for a teaser.
I find it refreshing that you use guitar for your starting point.
I'm pretty much in agreement with jmg8 on most things that he said.
I really like the BBD and the Tape delays.
The Multitap seemed to fall a bit flat (to me) but that is because I had been playing around with Eventide's Ultratap a while ago and that's quite a high standard to hold anyone to! (I'd recommend anyone writing presets for MTurboDelay check it out.)
Nebula seems to be your Turbo of them all, can't wait to check it out.

Not too sure about any suggestions other than it may be interesting to combine old and new. Perhaps something like Tape meets Granular. That just gave me an idea...how about adding reverse to the Tape?

Thanks for sharing!

BBD - I don't have a real BBD, so I can't say for sure, but I looking up info on them and compared them to plugins I have and its fairly similar. Also comparing it to youtube vids its close. Of course its not perfect, but not every BBD sounds the same, so its impossible to match things perfectly. I was debating on if I should add modern features or not. Most BBDs don't have much control over anything and the delay times are short. I figured I should try to emulate the sound of the BBD, but give it more controls/time so its similar to Echoboy, which seems to be a favorite delay plugin of many people. Maybe I should make it more basic though. Hmmm I'll wait for more feedback.

Digital - The vid was getting too long, so I had to skip some stuff. Sorry.

Tape - Same thing as with the BBD. I don't know if people want just the sound or the limitations. The different IPS frequency responses didn't make that much difference in my tests. The different colors are different types/speeds. I took 3 of the ones with the biggest differences and used them. Most of the others were so subtle they didn't make a difference. Maybe you're right and I should move the drive knob though.

Multitap - Perhaps that would be useful, although I was thinking of just making normal presets for it.

Envelope - It is the same as the autoswell function, but it only works on the wet sound. You have more control of it here though. Its good for ambient style sounds.

You're right I should change the knob colors to be more consistent. I'll do that. Thanks for the feedback and the ideas.

That's a good idea combining old with new. I'll think about that and see if I can come up with something. Thanks for the help.

This is how I add presets. You probably already know, but thought I'd share. The presets are the colours along the top, when you click on them it changes the values for all the parameters. Paste into MXXX

sounds good to me - I really like the reverse feature (I've been torturing Vojtech for some time to add that....)
Some years ago, NI had the Spectral Delay - I'd love to have something like that again...

Hi,

I like the sound and workflow of d16 repeater. Not a very special delay, but features different sounds and is easy and fast to set up.

Greets,
Marek
