How (comparable to what) is the cpu usage of Softube Modular?RPH wrote:At least modular works here, and there is support.
VCV is very much beta, no support, and doesn't run on my (new) pc.

actually, I think this is the kind of module/licensing that Softube need to save itself from VCV.
... Id love it, if they come how with a whole range of buchla modules.
Softube modular from the get go was going to be 'premium', at the outset people were complaining about $40.
so they need to target the higher price/license modules as proper clones... to differentiate themselves from the flood of virtual modular coming out, with replicas.... they just cant compete on a price level with 'free'
(I will say softube modular is far from perfect, they do need to improve their rack design!)
as for VCV, lets be careful ... the best VCV modules are all Mutable Instruments, code which is open source/free from license, and even compiles on windows/macs 'out of the box' , all VCV had to do was to put it in a wrapper. (I know, because I've done the same with MI code , giving it a pure data wrapper)
but they have now done that, coding their own modules is going to be more time consuming/difficult, so no surprise that when these are released you will have to pay for them... and you don't know what the cost is yet.
I've no issue with paying for VCV either (developers have to eat), but the current 'free' status is a bit like the way softube almost gave away their rack too (with a bunch of modules), but then charge a premium for licensed modules.
... its the in-app purchase model, not surprising to see it... given we have been buy VSTs for years too, which are not too dissimilar.

Just wait for black friday deals. Buying music software at regular price is dumb, with a very few exceptions, or maybe wait until someone dumps it in the second hand market.
I hope Softube commits more to Modular and there is more to come.

Us "bedroom musicians" are only a part of the market for plugins. There are a lot of professionals out there that would pay the $80-100 for this module in the context of their music making business - that's also who plugin "regular prices" are for.wagtunes wrote:[snip...]The only people who are going to pay that kind of money (and actually a lot more after the introductory period ends) are those who are 100% hardcore modular enthusiasts ...

Wow - this is the first addition that really interests me - but they still need to fix their stupid preset system first

Well, then I guess that's who they're targeting because it sure isn't me. lolplexuss wrote:Use "bedroom musicians" are only a part of the market for plugins. Agree that this is an exciting release. JRR have it cheaper of course.
More than I want to pay but I can understand it if Buchla are taking a cut.

A big patch in Softube Modular about 45% CPU on my Core i5 6600k processor, smaller patches at about 15-22%.Nielzie wrote: How (comparable to what) is the cpu usage of Softube Modular?
A big patch in Solorack runs at about 3% ( no oversampling, it rises quickly with it on ), big difference but I don't mind tho.

I will only consider this because I can get it cheaper from JRR, but I'm still on the fence. As far as I'm concerned, Softube just jumped the shark with this pricing. The landscape has quickly evolved since Modular was released. Now we have Solorack, Reaktor Blocks, and VCV as really viable competitors. Softube still wins on the sheer quality of their modules, but that may not be enough at the pace they're going. The open standard of VCV may propel that platform to much greater popularity and attract some other strong developers to contribute to it. After all, just look at how wildly popular Blocks has been, despite a less elegant patching system. I think VCV will mirror the overall success and diversity of hardware Eurorack, and Softube will eventually be left in the dust.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but has anybody created a Buchla 259 for Reaktor blocks? I know there are Buchla style ensembles in the users area but has anybody made this particular oscillator?

Not a block but there is one in (the stunning but hard to patch) Cloudlab 200t: https://www.native-instruments.com/en/r ... how/11077/.wagtunes wrote:This is going to sound like a stupid question, but has anybody created a Buchla 259 for Reaktor blocks? I'm hoping that Version 2 is going to be blocks based.
