Hehe! Yes, a lot of patience and routing to sort it all out.

First WIP for an OSC!
I decided to do a song in a genre i'm not very familiar with, pretty fun!
Although this synth has it's quirks, it's still manageable - though frustrating sometimes, even more when your song relies on some glitches :P
Any feedback is much appreciated!
EDIT: removed WIP

Wanted to try and make something melodic with this tricky synth, it was not easy though. As far as effects, really only used eq, compression, limiting, and some reverb. Result sounds like a chill R&B kind of thing.

my result: https://soundcloud.com/angel-muniz-soun ... gs-in-life

DAW: Reaper v.5.50
15 instances of Noisetar
1 ambience reverb
1 pongDelay2
everything has reaEQ
4x TDR Kotelnikov
2x S.L.A.X compressor
3x OTT
3x W1 Limiter

Cheers mates!

Wow, uh I mean, you used waveshapers or/like heeeeeeeeaavy distorsion right ?
This square sound seems un-realisable to me another way.
I feel like it's way above what we are authorized to do with effects, but I may have misunderstood something.

Nope, it's all done in the synth. Only used a few compressors in this to make up for the synth's wonkyness.
It's possible to overdrive(?)/glitch out the sine wave the following way.

1. turn BPmelody on and set width to -1.
2. set sustain to max to make the next step easier
3. hold one or more notes and sweep the BP pitch knob up and down (violently!)
4. ???
5. profit!
6. set BP pitch back to zero. Most other synth parameters don't seem to affect the sound in any way, no need to tweak them. You can still use the filter, reverb and stereo width.

The effect is temporary though, so you have to overdrive it every few minutes, and every time you open your project again. Because of this you can't really save this as a preset. Sometimes a synth voice stops working in which case you need to reload noisetar to get it back.

Well that was a challenge.

9 instances of Noisetar
10 x Channel EQ
9 x Compressor
6 x Stereo Delay
2 x Gain
1 x Space Designer
1 x Multipressor
1 x Limiter

The song was can be played only once after loading the project. Anything after that sounds completely random. Dear Noisetar, I respect you and all but you're impossible to work with :D

Post

Ah, that was a really fun tip, EscapeControl!!! :tu:
I did a quick little test with MuLab and it works quite well. One just have to watch release times, because overlapping notes will sort of toggle the effect as far as I can tell.

See attached rar!

Wow, my bad, your work on this glitch is very impressive !

Come to think of it, I just realized that some people may not understand what kind of melodic sounds can be created with Noisetar without any "trickery", if one accepts certain limitations in range and some creativity in note choices...
I've attached my main instrument, which really didn't need anything more than a bit of mix placement.
It's a fairly unique quality of Noisetar to produce this kind of rough stuff! 8)

generaldiomedes wrote:I think I have found one issue causing the volume inconsistency.

A long Release on the ADSR will interfere with following notes. Put a medium release on, and you get a loud-quiet note pattern. Putting on a really long tail and it interferes with notes for the duration of the release.

*EDIT*

OK, silly me. I had OSC2 rate at 0.10, and the AM modulation at 1.00. OSC2 seems to re-trigger when an ADSR envelope ends (not when another envelope starts) .. so basically I was starting the AM osc partway through other notes. I think.

At any rate .. it just seems like notes aren't totally independent even when only triggering one at a time.
I've also found volume inconsistency and self overdriving thing. It looks like it just happens sometimes. Playing some notes and tweaking ADSR brings sound back to what it was. ADSR then could be set back to previous setting. I'm not sure, but modulation rates doesn't seem related to this. Can't tell why this happens, is it a feature or a bug ? :)
Also, after DAW restart (Reaper) some presets seems to have to warm up :) At first they are silent and gradually comes to proper volume level.

Oh man... been so busy this month, completely forgot about this contest. Do I understand that voting will start on the 1st? I better participate because I have a vague memory of slapping putting together a track some eternity ago.....

Victor.

Some interesting tracks here.

I'm hoping in the upcoming months we have some more traditional cross-platform contests. Back in the day there was Diva, Alchemy, yada yada.

Good luck.

It is a moody, dynamic song that changes tone quite a bit throughout.
I really like Noisetar for what it is but for making this kind of music it felt like running a marathon on soft sand. I am happy with my finished product but I am very glad it is done.
I hope you enjoy.
