Hi, I've played with the grid editor to try to make an 8th note swing grid but had no luck, could someone please post one?

Thanks.

Post

Please elaborate.

Post

In the old versions of mulab there were 32nd and 16th note swing grids in the midi editor, I posted a while back about importing them into later versions of Mulab, I figured that out but can't figure out how to make an 8th note swing preset in the grid editor.

Hope that is enough, thanks.

What do u mean with 8th note swing?

Post

In earlier versions of Mulab there were grid presets in the note editor called 1/32nd Swing and 1/16th Swing, I'm trying to make a 1/8th note preset.

In 4/4:

Quarter notes: 1 . 2 . 3 . 4
16th Swing: 1 &.a 2 &.a 3 &.a 4 &.a (where the & falls on the "." above and the "&.e" is a triplet with the . silent)
Straight 8th: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
8th Swing: 1.a 2.a 3.a 4.a (where each note is a triplet with the . silent - which would mean 12 divisions per bar)

Does that make sense?

I still don't get it, but that may be me. Anyway, what's the issue making that in the grid editor?

pljones: Doesn't make sense sorry
mutools: Since the grid will be offbeat I can't figure out which position on the grid editor to place the markers.

I don't understand what you mean. You can put grid points on any position.
Please clarify, eventually with screenshot/video.

The problem is I don't know what the formula for placing the marker.

I tried opening 1/16th Swing preset and changing grid size to 0.1.00000 and that looks like it works as far as I know, thanks for your help.

For straight eighth notes you play on the beat and the half beat -- 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

For swung eighth notes you play the half beat "late" -- count eighth note triplets for the beat "1-e-a, 2-e-a, 3-e-a, 4-e-a" and play on the beat and the "a".

So, for eighth notes, your grid has eight divisions per bar.

For, eighth note triplets, you would need twelve divisions per bar. There's a 12th note grid in the library already, which is suitable. See attached project.

if that's too "straight", it does give you a starting point.
