Not strictly 'ambient' but three of my fav cd's are vol's 1 > 3 of Ambient Dub on the Beyond label. Bands such as G.O.I, Banco De Gaia, A.P.I, The Higher Intelligence Agency,etc..........great stuff

For a crash course in ambient, you could do a lot worse than getting all the A Brief History of Ambient on the Virgin label. I've got 4 (double cd) volumes of these and while they are resticted to bands on the Virgin label, they are superb and great value for money

Any Orb will do the trick, especially Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld or the Aubrey Mixes

KLF's Chill Out is still one of the best cds in this genre imo

Somebody mentioned "Carbon Based Lifeforms".
I just want to add some other artist from the french label "ultimae records" (ultimae.com):

Aes Dana with the album "Season 5" (that's my favourite ambient record so far)

Solar Field - "Blue Moon Station"

The colaboration between Aes Dana and Solar Fields called "H.U.V.A. Network" is excellent too. The album is named "Distances".

Actually songs from the mentioned musicians can be found in the compilations "Fahrenheit project" by the same label.

Steve Roach - Mystic Chords and Sacred Spaces (get the whole 4cd set, you won't regret it)
Paul Schutze - Apart (or just listen to Sleep 2...it sums up pretty nice)
