I'd like to hear from the people who know the facts about this from experience -- the sellers who have organized and run a group buy.

I'm within Devon on this one. All a group buy is going to do is bring some products into the "reasonable impulse buy" category. If I really want something, and consider it worth the price, I will save up for it and buy it. If I don't consider it worth the price, I won't buy it. A group buy might bring something down under my impulse buy threshold, but I'm pretty sure I won't find myself in the future holding off on buying something because it might get cheaper in some future group buy.
If that makes any sense.

I voted yes based on suspicion rather than experience. But this is something that concerns me. If I were in the development game I would definitely consider doing one of these, but ONLY if I had a new product that was nearing completion. Timing is a serious, serious thing in a market as crowded with competitors / freebies as the VST plugin market is. It would be a great idea if you knew you were going to release something new within three months of the close of the group buy.

How can group buy be bad, there is never a fixed price anyway. If you go to a shop and see e.g. a trouser, bike, TV, keyboard etc. you will (mostly) get a discount. So group buy here at kvr is the same for me.
If I am interested in a VSTi I first ask the vendor via email about a discount. What are lousy 10% off?
I hope group-buy stays alive.

Firstly Group Buys are awsome. The first vsti I bought was through a GB and the next and whenever I see something awsome like C5K, SS1, zeta+ at a price I can afford I look seriously at taking advantage of the opportunity.
I voted yes because if 100 people take advantage of a GB they are obviously interested in the purchase and are likely to be the people who would have bought it in the not so distant future if the GB had not come up. Therefore the buyers are likely to be fewer. On the other hand the extra users could help spread the word about an awsome product and increase purchases. Whatever happens, the developer has more users, which equals more word of mouth about quality products and they also get a large input of funds. Looks like win win to me although I still reckon it could kill sales immediately after a GB. Maybe not for long though.

I personally think too many group buys can over-saturate the synth market in general.
That said, it seems to be the trend, and both devs and buyers are happy thus far. so... guess its all good, for now

I love all these group buys. I am really glad people are doing them more and more. I am really interested in the rmiv group buy possibility right now. Like most everyone else on this site I can't seem to buy enough of this stuff.floyd wrote:I personally think too many group buys can over-saturate the synth market in general.

A group buy is a volume discount. Do you think manufacturers get upset when they receive an order for 1,000,000 widgets at a slightly reduced price? Do you think manufacturers are ecstatic when they receive an order for 3 widgets at an astronomical price?
Cameleon had over 400 purchases. Do you think he would've normally made that many sales? How long do you think it would've taken? What are the production costs and manufacturing costs of producing a VST instrument? I don't think Camel Audio lost money or sales........

and then there is the bigger user base effect. it helps to put a synth in a different sphere of esteem, when it becomes a quasi-standard. it will find more mentionings in people's lists, generate more user banks, etc. that in itself will put the synth in a better position also in terms of its future payoffs.Innominandum wrote:Cameleon had over 400 purchases.
