Sh-101 options?

I had a totally battery powered setup, the SH-101 had batteries, my Boss Dr-110 had batteries (Used to take it to high school to make beats), my Boss mixer had batteries (a 9 volt!), my flanger and Yamaha organ, all through a boombox. The power wasn't out for me, until the batteries died. Which back then was probably like 30 minutes. But I played a party with that, ran through the stereo in the house, playing random stuff between Depeche Mode and New Order records.atya wrote:Just play the living crap out of it. The neighbors certainly didn't miss my frequent air raid orchestrations at full volume through open windows

I'm moving 4000km south in two weeks and can't wait to run my entire stuff on solar power (+ some monster batteries).braj wrote: I had a totally battery powered setup, the SH-101 had batteries, my Boss Dr-110 had batteries (Used to take it to high school to make beats), my Boss mixer had batteries (a 9 volt!), my flanger and Yamaha organ, all through a boombox. That's awesome, we need to get some solar panels. I have an iPad running Korg Module with a little Nanokey Studio, and I have a portable solar panel array, it all fits in a small bagatya wrote:I'm moving 4000km south in two weeks and can't wait to run my entire stuff on solar power (+ some monster batteries).braj wrote: I had a totally battery powered setup, the SH-101 had batteries, my Boss Dr-110 had batteries (Used to take it to high school to make beats), my Boss mixer had batteries (a 9 volt!), my flanger and Yamaha organ, all through a boombox. I tracked down my old Yamaha keyboard model, it was a PS-30, I wish I still had that thing too. Ran through an Ibanez flanger it was quite something to behold in 1982 for me. We are so spoiled today. I vividly recall trying to explain to the music store guy the sound I was hearing on Kraftwerk songs. "whishewwwwwwwwwww......" He got me a flanger. A phazer may have been a better choice though.
The PS-30 had an audio in so if I really wanted, or had to, I could run that Boss 4x1 mono mixer into it and play everything out the big mono speaker on the Yamaha, which got surprisingly loud. Sans the flanger though.

That rings some bells over here ... especially the spoiled thing ... it probably can't get much worsebraj wrote: That's awesome, we need to get some solar panels. Having jobbed in a music store during those years I could take basically anything home and dive into it, sometimes for months but TBH I really don't miss a single one of those heavy suckers, most certainly not all the hum and noise - having lived on worked on the road for many years I enjoy the freedom of being able to run everything on a laptop wherever I am more than anything else.
The only heavy gear I still own are my Motif ES 88 (28 kilos + 16 kg flightcase, lol) my monitor speakers and a 61 key midi controller and I have no plans to add any further weight to that setup.

Here's a few demos I made when I had a real SH-101 next to me, I made a patch on the hardware SH-101 and then tried to recreate it in Strobe 1, but I'd imagine Strobe 2 can do the same:
101 Psy saw1
101 Hi Res Growl
101 Nasal
101 House bounce
101 PWM Synth
EVs curves/times seem to differ the most -as I hear it-. Then oscillators. Filter is really close, and attention was paid to programming and replicating, wich I think explains why a -good- part of the magic and spirit of the original can be heard.

This. SH-101 has a very typical sound that I happen to love. I'm glad -and lucky- to have one.braj wrote:Frankly, my opinion is you're nutsElektronisch wrote:to me SH-101 doesnt sound anything special, a bit of characterless synth. ....
And its just my opinionIt's a party over here right now,
I loved my sh-101 and I love the sound of both Tal Bassline and especially Lush. The SH-101 had loads of character, LOADS.

Oh really? Interesting. I just used the regular osc square and saw and then the square of the sub osc in order to get the same combination as the 101, but it sounded nothing like it. But I guess the sub could be used for osc/ usb square combo, but not for square and sub square combo, or all three, since there's just one square wave in the sub osc.himalaya wrote:To nail the '101' sounds in Strobe 1 I had to use its sub oscillators. The main oscillator with the two waveforms does not get the 101 sound. Strange but true. So I wonder if the same applies to Strobe 2 - I haven't tried to use it yet to emulate the Sh-101, but I would recommend anyone using it to only focus on the sub-oscillator and treat it as the main oscillator when making SH-101 sounds.Echoes in the Attic wrote:I was comparing strobe to tal bassline and could not get many of the classic oscillator sounds from the mixed waveforms quite right, especially at lower registers. It's worth remembering that Strobe 2 has gained new oscillator-level waveform shaping options, which v1 didn't have, so these have to be set to default, otherwise the basic sound of the waveform will change too much and make emulation of the 101 even more difficult. However, I'd love to get some time to test V2 if it can do the same SH-101 sounds that version 1 can, but with the main oscillator.
By the way, the audio examples I posted above, contain both the hardware SH-101 and Strobe, side by side in each example.

Speaking of the real SH-101, to my ears it certainly has character, which to me is very audible once two waveforms are combined. There is something 'solid' about that sound which standard two-oscillator synths struggle with or just simply can not provide. Even if we take a similar one-oscillator-several-waveforms design of Arturia Minibrute, it can not provide that certain 'density' of sound which just pour out of the SH-101, once the saw+square are mixed together.

Agree with everything about the character of the 101. For me its the solid punch of the envs. Almost a rubber quality, like a solid ball when bounced. No other synth has this. Great synth. Would never sell mine.

"Solid" is definitely a word I'd choose to describe the 101.
Demos for the SH-01A also sound impressive, Roland did a great job with that. I read they re-modelled the ACB, so it's better than the plugout version.
