“Edit Groups” Available?

Quick questions...Does Waveform have a way to edit multiple tracks simultaneously by assigning them to a common editing group? More specifically can I use the comp swiping feature on say one track and have other tracks also receive the same edits simultaneously? Logic has this ability and I was wondering if Waveform had something similar?

Never heard about something like this to be available in tracktion/waveform, but should check the pdf manual.

What edit functions are you wanting to simultaneously make on multiple tracks? Do you mean tracks, or clips?

Is it possible to assign multiple tracks to a common group for simultaneous editing of things like fades, doing Take Comping, trims, slip editing, etc?

Let's say I need to track 10 mics on a drumkit which will result in 10 corresponding tracks in Waveform. The drummer makes 20 or so takes and so now each of Waveforms 10 tracks have 20 layers each within them where I can do Take Comping to fish for the best parts. Can I assign these 10 drum tracks to a group so that any editing I do (let's say Track Comping in this case) to the Snare track would also simultaneously follow suite in the other 9 drum tracks? Same goes for fades, trims, etc.

LPX has this feature and they call it Phase-Locked Audio Editing, and it is especially useful any time there are multiple mics being recorded on a common source (like drums, guitar cabs, etc). Can Waveform do this?

I may well be under informed regarding Waveform options, yet the options I'm aware of are Linked Clip, and a comp copy /paste feature I requested for T7 that was implemented by the devs and is available in Waveform.

Linked Clip is great for creating copies of a clip that are all in edit sync with each other, with edits in one copy being replicated in all other copies. I don't see a way to link existing clips without making a copy. This option would thus be of no use in your scenario of multiple mics / takes.

Am I missing something here folks? Be great if you could create linked clips out of any existing clip.

As for making trims and in / out fades to the various clips, you can select them all and these edits will be implemented on all selected clips. Comp editing is NOT replicated to the other selected clips in this scenario. This is where you can use the comp copy / paste feature I mentioned above. It's a bit tedious, yet it's quick to perform once you've got your comp composed on one of the 10 mic tracks. Simply choose copy from the + button on that clip and then press the plus button on each of the remaining comp clips and paste the comp copy to each one.

Again, I may well be missing a better option / feature, or doing this in a non-efficient way, so anyone who knows better, please share!

Thanks for the good info. I didn’t know about the Comp Copy/Paste feature and I can see how that would be a handy tool in certain scenarios. I think perhaps the drawback of needing to make comp edits on a single track one-at-a-time (like say the Snare track by itself and then needing to copy/paste those comp edits to the remaining drum tracks) would be not getting to hear the comp edits in real-time in their full multitrack context without the initially edited track’s comp conflicting with the remaining not-yet-edited tracks’ comps.

I’m primarily an LPX user who abandoned the Tracktion ship after Mackie ruined T3 for Mac users, but I still miss the Tracktion ethos at times, especially the simplicity and immediacy of everything and how there’s minimal hoops to jump through for quick recording sessions. It seems like T7 still struggles a bit on CPU when hitting high track counts but for my uses it would be good for specific tracking jobs (like say guitars or vocals). I’m primarily a guitarist and sometimes I think it would be better for me to find a more simplistic DAW for when I’m tracking myself so that I can stay in musician mode versus juggling the musician and engineering hats which is usually happens to me in LPX. But I do rely heavily on LPX’s Phase-Locked Audio editing for most of my guitar tracking when using multiple mics on a given cab or speaker. Just not sure Waveform would fit that need for me just yet. I wish it did though.

At any rate I think you answered my questions and perhaps this sort of feature will show up in a future Waveform update? Will keep my eyes and ears open to future releases.

Thanks a bunch for the help! :tu:

I get it now. Yes, this would be VERY slow and tedious in Waveform as it stands.

I'm going to share this thread with the W devs and inquire about making the Linked Clip option able to link non-copied clips. Will update the thread if I get a response, or perhaps the devs could chime in here?

If you haven't, give the Waveform demo a spin. :D

Glad things made sense. And again thanks for chiming in and helping out. I do have the demo installed on my main MBP so I may decide to grab Waveform this week if they throw a really good sale on it. I'd love to grab BioTek as well as it is so unique and interesting. The Tracktion ethos is always a standout to me for the simple fact that they usually think outside the box and they often come up with inventive solutions for everyday tasks.

And it would be much appreciated if you pass this thread along to the Tracktion team. Maybe it'll show up in a future upgrade as it would be hugely useful in multitrack recording situations.

Glad to be helpful.

I'm a lifer on the Tracktion band wagon and also deeply appreciative of what they're developing and sharing with us! Since the Tracktion reclamation from Mackie by Jules and co, it's been great to see it's re-birth and evolution. There's still some niggles that need to be worked out, which others may well refer to as deal breakers, yet I'm still cheering for this company and it's products to survive and thrive well into the future.

I've passed along this thread link to the dev team, with a request to join the conversation. Being that they're a tiny group and deeply focused on getting Waveform 9 released on time, I'm not holding my breath, yet I trust we'll eventually hear from them.

Enjoy Waveform (and various bundle goodies) if and when you go for it.

Cheers!

Waveform 9? What’s the ETA on that?

My understanding, which may be incorrect, is that the goal is for a new version per year, typically released, or at least announced at Winter Namm.

Gotcha. Good to know! Thanks!

Ok...So I pulled the trigger on the Waveform Ultimate Upgrade Black-Friday promo. $75 for everything was pretty hard to pass up, especially as I was really wanting BioTek.

I’m still on the fence about whether to start relying on Waveform for tracking my personal guitar parts but I will at least give it a try. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out on future updates to see if edit groups for Take Comping gets implemented. Fingers crossed. I also picked up Studio One 3 this weekend while it was on sale and it strikes me as the halfway point between LPX and Waveform as far as workflow. Also SO3 has combined track comping via edit groups so it may be the better option for now. But the romantic side of me misses the charm of Tracktion so who knows.

At any rate thanks again for the helpful information and for making the Tracktion guys aware of this feature request. :-)

Best...

Cheers Mauvehead!

Hope Waveform and the bundle goodies work well for you. $75 is a great deal!

Still haven't heard from the T dev team, yet I'm not surprised for reasons I mentioned. Fingers crossed...

ETA for W9:

Announcement and news of new features at NAMM, Jan 25-28 2018. YouTube videos start to appear during/after that weekend and the subsequent couple of weeks.

Actual release date... well, these are the previous release dates:

T4 2013 Jan 24
T5 2014 Feb 1 (8 days later than 2013)
T6 2015 Feb 12 (11 days later than 2014)
T7 2016 March 1 (17 days later than 2015)
W8 2017 March 30 (29 days later than 2016)
W9 2018 ?

Release dates have not been earlier than any previous dates and W8 was 3 days later than my estimate*, but I'm expecting W9 to be the first early one.

* aka complete guess based on 8, 11, 17, 26 being a nice sequence.
