This is way off the beaten path, but you could also consider recording into a dedicated auido editor like Audition..get in there & clean up your take before it even finds it's way in the mix..
Failing that, Cubase SL is within your price range, even if it's doo-doo Brown for me, but I just looked at N-Track & moving to SL could be a reniassance for you

damn! been outside stepping in fire ant hills and come back to this! thanks guys for the replies.
i've tried using FL as a VSTi in n-track, but the directions with n-track on how to set up a vsti are terrible (for me at least).
let me read some more of these replies here.......

Yep. That's why I ReWire OPlat to Tracktion, between the two of them I can do anything, any time, anywhere.bluedad wrote:audio in orion sucks.sickle666 wrote:Orion Platinum or EXT.

I dont use orion, but from what Ive seen... rewiring it to tracktion or n-track would be a great solution for you.

Maybe I'm missing something but can't you record audio in FL Studio these days? That being the case, why not use FL for everything? Cheapest option I can think of with the easiest learning curve.
I use ORION with Cool Edit 2000 because I can invoke CE2k by right-clicking on my audio track in ORION so what I really have is all the power of Cool Edit inside ORION, which makes me wonder exactly why anyone would think that audio in ORION isn't any good.

yeah, fruity does record audio, but in a round about complicated way. its probably the weakest feature on fruity i can think of (but i still love it
) since i do about 75% audio i'm really looking for something else that can do it all.
as wopelka and donks suggested, i tried screwing around with fruity as a vsti in N-track last night - almost smashed my computer. i'm going to fiddle with rewire tonight. it seems i might have the tools to do what i want in front of me, but i'm a bit midi ignorant and n-track isn't exactly easy to implement this (for me anyway). thanks again for the replies everyone.

If Orions audio recording is so good, why are you going to Cool Edit?
To me, it's not that the sound is bad, just the way it's implemented to get the job done. I don't even try; when I want to record audio and use Orion, it's rewired to cubase.

Hmm, Mr Willium suh, I tried the n-track demo just out of curiosity (I have no problems, running FL in cubarse so I thought I'd see how it fared), Seemed to work fine for me, although it did get stuck while doing theinitial scan of vst plugins so I pointed n-track to another directory with just a copy of the FL vst dll in it, and it ran with no problems at all.t-willy wrote:

twilly, I'm a fellow ntracker... while your looking around, as an interim measure - how to do VSTi in NTrack:
Load VSTi using Track->MIDI->New VST Instrument Channel->[Your choice here]
On a MIDI track, get the properties box up, in the Output to, select the VSTi you have loaded ALSO set the Channel you want to communicate through. I assume FL is multitimbral, so channel will matter. You will also find that some (especially SynthEdit VSTis) will ONLY listen to channel 1. Channel 10 is normal for drums.
In the Mixer, rename the instrument channel (or channels if it is a multi out plug..which I guess FL would be) to something more appropriate. I often have a few instances of sfz, and knowing which is the cello, and which the lead guitar can make quite a differnce!
Hope this hasn't been teaching you to suck eggs, but just before you shell out that's a quick walk through. I pretty by only use VSTi with Ntrack, with the occasional vocal. I've found it to be incredibly stable, with crashes coming only from the odd rouge VST/i.
