Hey Urs, I was just wondering if you have ever heard from Dave Smith about your plugins, I'm probably going to read The Prophet from Silicon Valley: The complete story of Sequential Circuits sometime soon, I grew up where Sequential Circuits grew up. Anyhow, if I were him, I'd feel honored with how much love you and your team have put into your synths.

I sincerely hope he would like our stuff if he ever checked it out. I did offer him NFRs but he answered something along the lines of not even having a plug-in host to check it out. I guess he was telling me in a nice way that he's not interested in Repro at all. He did however answer a lot of questions that were itching me when we spoke over Absinthe last year.

He can't/doesn't wish to comment/crossmarket/endorse us in any way, I totally get it and I won't bother him about it.

The book about SCI is a great read, many enjoyable anecdotes.

I thought you said he'd seen it and liked it... my mistake.

Well, from your link, all it says, we asked if he objected us including the original factory presets. He simply replied that he'd be fine with that as long as we credit brand names to brand owners. There was no indication that he had seen it, let alone had an opinion about it.

When I briefly demoed Repro-1 to him during Superbooth 2016 he neither went "you bastards" nor "OMG great job". He smiled as he always does, and we went over to the Absinthe bar and had a drink. I guess he's simply "seen it all". I totally get it, he's been doing this for way longer than me, and if a newcommer came up to me and said, "yo man, I figured out how Zebra works", I'd be all the same like "so what?".

I really doubt Dave Smith doesnt have any VST host...i mean DAW is already a vst host and as a hardware product developer he must test his stuff if its "working properly". I didnt met him personaly nor i see his reaction, but from what Urs says Dave seem to be a bit disrespectful.

It may be that he just can't say 'good job' without that being a sort of endorsement, plus people get quoted for stuff they say, he may just have been careful what to say and what not to say. Plus I doubt he is the one that tests for his company ;)

That was not my intention to say at all. I don't recall the exact wording, he was just nicely saying that he's not interested in synth plug-ins. There's nothing disrespectful about it.

Nah man, we had good talks and lots of laughter. I guess he probably just doesn't wanna try the Nth software emu of his work and be obliged to comment on it. I totally get that.

I've read in at least 2 interviews that synth plug-ins don't interest Dave Smith, even though he was the first person to come up with a synth plug-in that was used by a significant amount of people.

I guess a "good job" wouldn't have cost much though. Actually, i guess i'd be honored if someone valued my work so much that he decides to do an emulation of it, thus making it "immortal", especially when it's on such a high level of accuracy. I don't think Dave Smith is a bad guy, he seemed pretty likeable in videos, but, the lack of reaction seems a bit disappointing.

Actually, i always wondered why most companies act so stepmotherly regarding emulations of their work. Roland is pretty "selective" about it too. I mean, obviously, as one can see with the Roland cloud synths now, it's always possible that the company itself plans on doing some emulations of their gear at some point, but, when you remove all the reference, and play it clean, i wonder what's so bad about it, especially in such a small market, where many companies are familiar with each other.

Maybe he really doesnt care, and was being polite. He is, after all, still making the 'real thing'...
