Are there any low CPU ways a VST (like Reaktor) can communicate pitch, velocity, and modulation information besides via MIDI? I thought about sending all data as audio signals, but I assume that is a lot of work for the CPU. Are there any other options?

AFAIK MIDI is the only way.
Of course if the VST supports translating that into separate audio signals then you can use these audio signals in MUX as modulation signals using the Audio To Modulation Converter.

Thank you. I'm assuming MuLab would find 16 channels of MIDI events easier to process than 16 audio channels in terms of CPU usage, right?

Indeed, but not only MuLab, any audio app ;)
