How about asking mod to create Safe Space forum?

Here's a wacky notion: why don't you raise this on the Reaper forum?

Even dickheads have opinions. I see this Reaper Forum issue as a positive thing. Now we know who these dickheads are, and it's because Cockos provided a forum for them to tell the world, "Hey, look over here, I'm a dickhead, check me out". What Cockos should do is lock the thread so they can't backtrack.

Just my opinion, but I think this thread is Rea-diculous.

I haven't visited the Reaper forums much recently, but even a quick skim thru that thread shows folks joking about the "Rea" prefix that gets applied to many included Reaper processors (ie: Rea-Verb).
Someone asked a question about a musical ritard... and that lead to a joke using "word-play" with Rea-Tard.
I don't think you'd find anyone on that forum seriously poking fun at someone with a mental disability.

FWIW, I hear (and say) far worse than that driving down the road on a near daily basis. :wink:
IMO, You can spend your life looking for reasons to be upset/offended... or simply choose to spend your time/energy elsewhere.

With names like Cockos, Jesus-sonic, etc... these guys are somewhat free-spirited (non-conformist) and outside the corporate norm.
Not much different than Dave Friedman naming his amps Brown Eye, Pink Taco, etc.

No no no no, see. It's not that it bothers him, it's supposed to bother us too. We're ALL supposed to be frothing at the mouth right now ready to join him in his martyr's crusade.
Well, what's the purpose of using offensive language if nobody is offended? It is the OP's reaction that gives the posts at the Reaper forum meaning (especially since these posts have an almost complete lack of actual content).

Just when I was about to switch to Reaper... :roll:

Seriously, it's just a pun. I don't see any problem with that post, frankly. Retard is not really used for handicapped people, but as an insult for non-handicapped people that do stupid things.

And the sexual comment, I have seen such posts on KVR as well over the years. It's probably Americans, who tend to be more vulgar by nature...

In terms of ethics, I find Reaper superior actually. They offer a discount for simple users like me. I can install Reaper on several computers. No premium features for wealthier customers. They are pretty generous and offer a lot for the money.

Thanx for the heads up on a lovely Reaper theme...

Retard = learning difficulties
Spastic = physical problems

I don't think the word retard is used to refer to people with mental problems, anymore. It is almost always an insult. A bit like negro for a black person, it is simply not used anymore in a serious context.

Post

"Serious context" is also absent when 14year old 'brains' discuss in a way that reflects their intellectual capability.

That said: There's not always a serious society problem involved when you're just facing a bunch of juvenile idiots having an internet connection.

In a sense, that's the real problem, not the word itself. Change the word for mentally handicapped to something else, and you can bet that it will start being used as an insult too. That's why being too PC and getting hung up on the words themselves is counter-productive. The problem is more when people think it's absolutely normal to use insulting words casually in everyday conversation with unknown people. That's a mindset issue, not a lexical one.

mgw38 is right, this is a problem of code switching and not having been taught (or understood) what is appropriate and when. It's the same as writing a CV in txtspk. While it might be fine to say "how you doing old git" to a close friend, don't say that during a job interview. I find it strange that this isn't blatantly obvious to everyone. But there seems to be a magic field on the internet that affects people's perception and makes them forget that they are posting in a public place and that the other users are regular people too. Those users could be your mum, your teacher, your boss, your neighbour for all you know. If you wouldn't talk to them like that IRL, it has no place on the internet either.

Not being someone who frequents the Reaper forums much, I can't comment on the atmosphere there. If it's just the odd post, then I'd chalk it up to a few bad apples that you get everywhere. The first thread is pathetic more than anything else. So some 13 year old got Reaper and felt the need to post some drivel on the internet. No one responded. Seems fair enough to me. It's quite clear from the post that the poster is a "moron", for want of a better term. Not much you can do about that, except not elect him as POTUS.

The second thread is (IMO) not intended to be offensive, but could be seen as offensive. The more worrying thing to me is less the use of the word retard or the play on words, but the reaction to being told that the use of the word is seen as highly offensive by certain people. It's OK not to know that; to not care that you are causing offense is however disrespectful. Even if you disagree, there's no need to intentionally offend someone. I'm not Muslim, but don't see the point in printing cartoons mocking the prophet Mohammed. That's just intended to cause uproar and offence. It's not necessary. You might not agree with the idea that depicting Mohammed is a sin, but you can still show a bit of respect towards those that do. I like the way that Civ 4 included religions in the game - including Islam - and also featured prophets. But Mohammed does not make an appearance and is not depicted in-game, just to show a little cultural sensitivity. Why not? It doesn't ruin the game for non-Moslems, it just shows an understanding of other cultures.
