Be sure to set the RMS value carefully. The manual explains it.

Those things are on sale all the time. It’s not uncommon to pick up for something around $30. So yeah, they can be well within the right price range.

The V is on sale, that has a great sound for soul and r&b, it helps Tom gain stage it for -22dB though, like the original unit. It sounds cleanest with the input on 0dB, but clean isn’t always what you want.

Sadly, the ones I mentioned aren’t on sale, they have been, and will be again. I one pays retail for them.

My recommendation is IK Multimedia's Bus Compressor at $75, with the "NAMMSLAM" discount coupon, or Precision Comp/Limiter on sale at $50. Both products are available at the said prices through the end of this month.

Some I use are:

API 2500

Both great choices. The Neve will give you extra flexibility though. As cool and as iconic as the SSL Buss Compressor is, it lacks flexibility.

Something worth considering.

Rar isn't bad but prefer a Zip compressor

My favorites for gluing a song together in mastering (and on busses if I'm mixing for a client) turns out to be Eventide Omnipressor lately and sometimes Variety Of Sound's Slick HDR. Most itb compressors I find a bit flat and 2d sounding so I don't have many favourites. Kotelnikov can be useful - it kind of does glue but without any vibe - don't use it often for that purpose. IKM's Classic Compressor was surprisingly good for gluing purposes too (before I stopped using it).

I also produce House and Detroit-Techno music. Mostly oldschool style without samples but synths and drum machines. That's what I grew up with in the late 80s and early/mid 90s.

Back in the days the few friends that I had only produced their stuff with a pure hardware setup: MPC60, Sp1200, Ensonique Samplers and a bunch of Synthesizers. And the first generation of digital Yamaha mixers with those cool motorized faders tracked on some ADATs. I never had the money to buy stuff like that on my own.

But since I produce Itb on my own there is one plug-in I can't live without on my drum bus because it gives me the exact glue and sound that I want: the IKM Classic Multiband Limiter. Tbh when it is not there it doesn't sound right to my ears. I have not used it on anything else than drums but this thing is the bomb for me. I use my own presets for that thing and I think I only have four that really work but I enable it right after having a vague idea of a beat and my drums sound spectacular. At last for me.

The only freeware that comes close to it is 5orcery by Platinum Ears. Slam it on your drum bus and dial in the settings that you want. It's not an easy task but if you experiment enough you will maybe find the glue you are looking for. Maybe... :)

But it is only a part of it. It depends on how you level the single drum sounds in front of it, how you processes them etc.

So my recommendations: either the IKM Classic Multiband Limiter (paid) or 5orcery by Platinum Ears (free but 32 bit only iirc) on your drumbus.

Hey Loz,
Just curious but why did you stop using it? Have you found a better one like eg the Omni?

Because I really dig the Classic Comp. Not everytime and on every material but this one is definitely one of the first I try.

And yeah, I really like to work with VOS Slick HDR too. But only on my master as a finisher. And with really subtle settings (mostly greens).

Cheers

In addition to PSPs FETpressor they also have the excellent BUSpressor. Might be out of your £ range though.

There's quite a selection out there.
