Ableton Live 10 Released

Btw a few people on the ableton forums are saying 10 is killing their CPUs in comparison to 9...

During use beta i checked it as well at whole host performance thru popular test from ableton forum (It's can be grab here https://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=191549 ) My result was the same as in v9, not bigger.

The only thing, when i tried scroll by mouse horizontal time bar during playback test projecti i can noticed little rare cpu spikes, it was similar to increased loading from video component (due to UI engine, someting like that). In v9 i could not reproduce that effect. But I do not consider this important. And again, it was beta, maybe something has changed.

Added: oh i see problem for download test zip now (404), so i attach original file for just in case

Wavetable's been a fair bit more CPU intensive than what I've seen others having... Then again, could just be a testament to my crappy FX-6300.

Regarding GUI scaling, i find 110% looks quite good on both my monitors: 1920x1200 main, 1680x1050 second.

Oddly enough, it gets a little blurry looking at 110% for me on roughly the same setup...

I'm ending up spending the $299 the upgrade to 10 costs from 9 on Logic X, Reaper, and a Reaper only VSTi that adds Session View to Reaper.

I get a lot of features Live may never get: VCA faders, MPE support, Poly aftertouch, SysEx natively, NRPN support, more than 128 parameters of automation, screen sets, (in Logic better instruments), (in Reaper better time stretching, spectral editing, 32 bit VST and VST3 support), Pitch correction Melodyne style, extensible key commands not to mention hundreds of possibilities key command wise, vastly better CPU performance, better browsers, articulation maps, score editors etc. etc.

I've just been realizing that I've used Live since version 3, and the major upgrade that changed Live for me was version 4, after that it's been things that have almost nothing to do with playing live, performing etc, just incremental improvements to move it closer in abilities to DAWs like Cubase, Logic etc. Meanwhile those DAWs have added VCA faders, MPE support, Articulation Switches, spectral editing etc. etc.

Live 9 still works here, and I get all the features above, for less than $299. In fact Reaper at $60 plus $20 for the Session View VST would cover most everything above. Logic just has some older songs I used and can be fun in it's own right, also support for the Raven MTi2, and ARA support.

I love me some Live, I've recommended it to people, but at this point I think it's becoming bogged down in it's own success. In Seattle anyway it's a buzz word DAW, and I'm starting to not understand why.

The text is a little blurry but it seems to be like that whatever size i choose. They definitely need to do a bit more work on the graphical side of things. I'd rather have larger text in the browser and track titles but keep other stuff like the clip titles smaller.

Thanks guys for your inputs and opinions, especially about the upgrade for the Standard users. (which I am)

I was on the fence, hesitating to upgrade or not (still staying in Standard, I don't need all the stuff in Suite) but now I think I'll wait for a sale or a better upgrade deal, very steep upgrade price for new fonts and couple of cosmetics tweaks.

By memory I think it's April and it's upgrade sale too.

Probably a dumb question here but since I'm new to Suite.

There's a Convolution Reverb as a downloadable pack, but it appears to be included in M4L Essentials too. Are they the same and is there any reason to have both installed?

They added some convoluted aspect in installation process for the sake of making it more convolution reverb.

To answer my own question, the separate version of Convo "looks and feels" more like an Ableton Live device, whereas the M4L Essentials one looks different. Seems to be the same for the other devices that are included in the core pack (eg: Note Echo, Envelope).

There doesn't appear to be a way to remove the "duplicate" devices from the Essentials pack though.



edit: It looks like duplicates can be removed by simply deleting them from their installed location.

Seems to be. Actually super glad it's like that, got close to backing up my packs folder just incase.
