In their defense (and it's a prety weak defense), they're not the only company out there with a bad installer.

I've found that almost any VST that comes with an installer can be a real pain in the ass, like the ones that insist on installing into a folder named "vstplugins" no matter what, so when you choose a subfolder to install into, it creates another "vstplugins" under that subfolder! Thanks!

Then there are the ones that don't tell you that they will be creating their own subfolder so you get "vstplugins/subfolder/subfolder/vst.dll" - gotta love that one.

Oh, but the best are the ones that get confused when you don't choose the default path they give you and add an extra folder called "dummypath" to the end. What's up with that? :?

But they are all better than an installer that wipes out your vstplugins folder without warning. :-o

It might help Tracktion and Cubase to load quicker, though. Maybe I'll give it a try!

Well I purchased the PSP stereo pack as an introduction to PSP before considering purchasing anything else from them I thought I would just start small.

Now that installer is fantastic  – what it does is look at every file on your hard drive to work out where your vsti folder is (rather than just ask).
:-o
Now I will not install it (basically I don’t fancy the wait while it searches tons and tons of GIGs of disk space)(a lot of folders) I dare not estimate the time it would take

Best regards,

I think you took his post the wrong way for some reason - I can tell you Dan is a very cool guy - I've worked with him a lot in the past with various things. He's just warning users to pick the right folders so this doesn't happen.
Quote: "SpinEQ is based on old setup that has a bug that if something wrong went during the installation it removes all the files in the Product folder..."

I have nothing against Dan personally,he may very well be a cool guy. But it is unacceptable to me that a known buggy installer could be distributed.

Sorry about all this - a bit of a nightmare indeed.

We've just put the three files needed to fix the crashing up on our website, you'll be pleased to hear. You can get 'em from...

ftp://ftp.futurenet.com/pub/computermusic/SpinEQ.zip

Unzip the files to Program Files\Spin Audio\SpinEQ CM\skins\default (assuming the default installation path was used), overwriting all three existing files and you're ready to rock.

So your proposed solution for the "known to be buggy to the point where the install can wipe your VST folder unless you stick to the defaults" installer problem is to tell people to run the installer ** with no warning about what will happen if they change the defaults ** and then patch the end result by overwriting some files

There's a good chance that the only working VST they'll have on their system after that is SpinEQ - is that the master plan??

Why not just get rid of the installer and post all of the files on the website for people to copy - I know that the SpinEQ plugin (although free) has to be registered as some kind of copy protection but, let's face it, this thing has the best copy protection I've ever seen already - at this rate nobody will want a copy :D

If you think I'm ever running that installer program again you must be barking mad.

Derek.

time to update the installers no doubt.

Long blablabla-thread and you're loosing time:

Thanks for the kind thought (and the links) vista, but I have now fixed this thanks to the built-in restore function in WinXP (which I'd forgotten about to the point where I'd forgotten to turn it off - phew!).

Derek.

Sorry - that's not totally what I meant...

I read back what I posted before, and I said that the CM studio is "irrelevant to anyone who has a decent DAW". I stand by that point, and would add that anyone who doesn't have a decent DAW (e.g. the begginners for whom CM studio is intended) is likely to find Muzys hard to get the hang of (compared with Tracktion for example, which is much more suitable for beginners). I have several Music Technology students who have bought CM magazine and found the Muzys stuff extreemly confusing (even the installation, let alone the programme itself).

Regarding the CM plugs, I overstated my case, because they are capable of some good things. ANd I agree with you about the CM Vocoder - particularly good. Also CM505 is worth using. Again, though it depends on whether you actually have anything else, or are just starting out.

I don't find SR202 useful, but then I have Reason 2.5, so I naturally use that programme, which I'm sure you will agree is superior.

And I found the PSP springverb was unacceptably heavy on CPU (in fact I've found that with other PSP stuff too). I recommend Kjaerhus plugs as a better FREE alternative, or of course Ambience.

Hope this clarifies what I said, and I must try not to exagerate next time!

This is Dan from SpinAudio,

We've made the corrections to the setup so now it contains some checkings to avoid installation folder conflicts and also fixes the bug related to automatic product folder clean-up of failed installation.

You can download the working installer by the link below:

http://www.spinaudio.com/cgi-bin/redire ... 10Demo.zip

We sincerely apologize for any inconveniece caused by the corrupted installer.

There are now official information about the problem on our web site and on CM's.

We are also now updating our products based on old setup with this new fix.

I hate to be predate on your misfortune & exploit this little glitch, but since buying the magizine is now a redundancy to recieve this copy of the plug, what limitations are on this version, eh?

:D

Good. I cannot, for the life of me, understand why you wouldn't have fixed this the first time you heard of this happening.

I've not tried this yet (was put off with the installer problems) but in CM there is a section on using the EQ and also an email address/reference number which you have to use to obtain a valid serial for the plug. I emailed yesterday, as of yet have had no reply (I'd have thought this would be automated?!).

I've just bought CM58 (as I don't yet subscribe)...but not with the same anticipation as usual. In fact I had a heavy heart having read this thread and got into "negative" mode...

Anyway, I took one look at the SpinEQ pictures and just wished it would have been a sound piece of software. Instead, we now know that:

1. The installer is buggy, as are Spinaudio's paid for plugs, apparently :?

2. The CM team managed to further corrupt the files.

Personally I can live without this kind of hassle.

Reading the mag, in addition to the SpinEQ plug, there's a news item of Spin's new mixing station thing, and a rave review of their Roomreverb plug. Obviously CM and Spin are best friends this month... but after all is said and done the word Tarnished comes to mind.

In fact I have found myself taking all CMs reviews a little less seriously this month, and wondering all kinds of stuff...

Let's hope normal service is soon resumed and confidence rebuilt, because up until now, CM has been MY BIBLE :!:
