What am I missing?

I was just recording a short bass line with my keyboard today, and that made me think of something. Supposedly, MIDI editing is in need of an overhaul, but I really have no idea what Tracktion is missing. It has all the quantize options I need, and as I don't have any outboard gear, I don't really need to do much CC editing. Maybe it's just me and my own workflow, but I don't get what people want.
Actually, there is one feature I'd like added: when adjusting note lengths and starts using the MIDI timecode, the mouse sensitivity is way too low. It'd be nice if there was a shift-click modifier that makes the mouse more sensitive.

The show stopper for me is the lack of step recording, i.e.,
1. How do I enter notes step by step from a midi keyboaord, rather than a mouse?
2. How do I skip a note ( i.e., leave a space) in between notes entered on a midi keyboard?
3. How do I define the length of the notes entered?
4. Can I nominate triplets, if so how?
5. How do I alter the volume/velocity of the recorded midi notes?/Draw in a velocity ramp?
Now then I asked all this in another thread, and was informed that I needed separate (but free) software in the form of stepchild:
http://subminimal.org/tools.php
Not tried this out yet, but I guess if you can play the keyboard in real time, none of this matters. I can't!

I've heard a lot of people asking for piano roll improvements, but I haven't heard anything specific. The only thing I remember being requested was adjusting the length of a group of notes in the roll, which can't be done right now. Automation ramps, or possibly even curves, would be a nice change, but hardly what I'd class as a major difference.
And you can already draw in a velocity ramp. Just set it to controller edit mode for velocity (default shortcut "v"), and draw away.

Sounds like you'd be happier with a step sequencer. Have you tryed Energy Xt? Its a killer step sequencer and much more. FL Studio is also has a good step sequencer. I dont think Jules ever planned for Tracktion to be a full blown step sequencer but luckily things like EXT run inside Tracktion pretty well.Bill wrote:The show stopper for me is the lack of step recording, i.e.,

Fortunately I run both FL and Cubasis for my step sequencing needs which is only 5-10% of what I do. 90%+ is audio hence my love for Tracktion. Rather than buy and then learn EXT (which I understand is not as easy as T - but what is?) , I'm rather hoing T2 will make this unnecessary.AD80 wrote:[

1. %-based quantize is only available per-clip, not per note.
2. moving and resizing notes should be done with the same tool, a la Sonar.
3. notes shouldn't default to 127 velocity
4. lack of ghost clips
5. velocity editing for groups of notes is broken
And lots more.. There is certainly room for improvement.

Actually, that's a really good point. One thing I love about Tracktion (in general) is that it makes use of all the functions of my mouse in most cases. For MIDI editing, maybe the select tool could be the default left-mouse button, and the right mouse could be the pencil tool. Or something like that.floyd wrote: 2. moving and resizing notes should be done with the same tool, a la Sonar.
Anyway, I guess my fears of completely different MIDI editing in T2 are unfounded, since the requested features are mostly minor, although there certainly are a lot of them.
