MIDI learn vs. CC assignment

What would be the pros and cons of having a MIDI controller learn through 'MIDI learn' some parameters vs. having the assignments defined in for instance for Diva, the com.u-he.Diva.midiassign.txt file such as:

Via File (or the corresponding GUI page) you have more tweaking options like encoder mode.
