In what way isn't it working right? Last time I tried a couple days ago it worked as expected for me.zerocrossing wrote:Oh, I know how to do it. I got really weird behavior where assignments would just stop working or all of the sudden start controlling two parameters.pdxindy wrote:In what way isn't it working right? Overall, Bitwig has been a lot more buggy for me. Many plugins have weird issues or even cause blue screens, which rarely happened in Live. Also, it doesn’t pass MPE to my Micromonsta. Maybe that’s my MOTU Midiexpress’s fault?

Most people want piano roll features and I don't blame them at all! I would love to see Ableton's convert to MIDI functions though (drums, melody, harmony), but thats is probably a pipedream. However, sometime perspective is needed.
It looks like had to rush to get Bitwig 2.3 out in time for original 2.0 license holders to qualify for it as a free update. ONE day after the 2.3 beta 5 or 6 was launched, it goes straight to live next day. And then a week or less goes by and 2.3.1 is out... and 2.3.2 RC1 is posted for download. I mention this to show what where their priorites laid and why they could not focus on other things at the time. Time stretching has always been a valid complaint and rightfully so if it really wants to compete with Ableton, however it was probably was difficult to get the Zplane implemented without bugs on the first live release (which is kind of all they had a shot at). So that's one thing they had to focus on instead of other things. They also "had" to release Phase4 in time for 2.3 because releasing it after the cutoff date would create ill-will. Also, they have created several other instruments, so it was probably easier to rush making a synth instead of completely new functionality.
That leads us to now. Now that they have the original subscribers out of the picture, I think they should focus on are quality of life features features first. I come from Cakewalk Sonar and yes, I realize that is an extrmely mature product with tons of years of development, however some ideas of what they could focus on

- Better built in help! Tooltips require you to waste a couple seconds for it to appear, has short or unhelpful descriptions, and isn't even available for everything you think it would be. Ableton has a dedicated help box that is really helpful, much moreso than keeping a PDF open on the side. It's nice to just learn things on the fly fast, like different GUI things or what the variable in their synths do. I'm not a synth expert, but it would help if I coudl get a description of what I'm doing instead of blinding turning or pushing buttons that are only labeled with icons.
- The export feature needs a SERIOUS update. Look at what Sonar offers, it has tons of formats and doesn't need some specially designed page (it acn use the window's "save as" function):
https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/40c85 ... 970-80.jpg - At the minimum, can we get LOSSLESS exporting instead of wave files!? It doesn't even need to be FLAC, I'll take something modern like TAK or WavPack
- Devices - please let users show/hide anything they want, or make it smart, like hide VST2 if VST3 is available as an option. Maybe they could even use a simple INI file that has a list of everything and you just modify what you dont want shown.
- Devices and such - let us create new categories beyond Synth, Bass, etc
- FL Studio has a device that lets you make comments onto any insert... Could we get that for Bitwig? You could insert it as a device to "mark up" things or maybe good for review purposes. Or maybe some other functionality that functions like Microsoft Office's Review tab.
- There's no template selector when starting the program... and make it so we can set sample rate and bit depth manually for projects? I can't believe this basic functionality is missing.
- Bitwig doesn't have their own forums and their "answers" page is barren. They should however utilize the community. Why not run an official poll to determine one of the next splashy features they come out with? They could inform everybody by pushing news of this as an in-program notification.
- Devices per clip. Sonar lets you have multiple clips on one track with different devices for each one. They have per track devices and per clip devices.

Always interesting to see how different the wishes of people are. I don't care about any of the features on the selection list
I am missing very simple things:
- Scaling of waveforms! It is currently very hard to cut audio in the arranger.
- Mute MUST mute MIDI as well!
- Layered clips in arranger -> no cutting of edges when you move them
- MP3 export
- Add more keyboard shortcuts:
- Move play cursor to start of project
- Move play cursor to left (fast)
- Move play cursor to left (slow)
- Move play cursor to right (fast)
- Move play cursor to right (slow)
- Move play cursor to start of loop
- Move play cursor to end of loop
- Set loop start to play cursor
- Set loop end to play cursor
- Set loop to selected clips
- Cut clip at play cursor
- Select Arrange Panel Layout
- Select Mix Panel Layout
- Select Edit Panel Layout
- Insert cue marker
- Select cue marker X

When I asked support for this a couple of years ago, the answer was a shocking: "The mixer in Bitwig is only for audio"moss wrote: - Mute MUST mute MIDI as well!

what I'm using in Logic and miss from BWS in prio order are the
- piano roll features (brush, velocity ramp etc.)
- ghost/alias clips
- groove templates
- some new MIDI environment for cross track routing / modulations
- MIDI channels (new possibilities with it would be endless)
and a quick demonstration

Honestly, right now, I only wish that every feature that is already implemented would work flawlessly without bugs, as much as possible. A reliable and a stable DAW, where one does not hit bugs and regressions on some simple tasks!

Ok. Seems like the shortcut works on both. If you select a region it will loop the region if you select a clip it will loop that clip.moss wrote:AFAIK only for the selected region.stamp wrote:We allready have this, don't we?moss wrote: - Set loop to selected clips

That is excellent video. I never really explored environment much but this shows it's really powerful.xbitz wrote:what I'm using in Logic and miss from BWS in prio order are the

I am wondering how did you make piano roll blocks showing note names?
edit: Never mind, I find out note labels

New poster here and new Bitwig user. I'm going to throw my two cents towards both track comping and midi editing features. I already love Bitwig for some of the fancy and cool things you can do when it comes to sound design and modulation, and there are some great midi features already (like the little graph editor, for example).
Having said that, personally I think that the absolute bread-and-butter of any DAW is really tracking and editing audio and midi, and any effort that's put into improve those fundamental aspects of music production will really pay off down the road.
Much like Ableton Live, Bitwig's audio workflow gets the job done, but frankly, without proper support for comping multiple takes it doesn't reflect the reality of most music production: producing a great track often requires recording multiple takes and comping the best bits. Now I personally think Live is a good DAW in many respects, but I think it's somewhat of a dropped ball that even after 10 major versions, Live has ignored a fundamental aspect of music production and still doesn't have comping. Bitwig is such a cool tool already, and I hope it doesn't make the same mistake that Live did by ignoring something as essential as comping for years and years!
When it comes to midi editing on the piano roll, it's really just about "quality of life" and giving users the ability to do what they want to do quickly and easily. We have some nice instruments, we have extremely powerful modulators, now I think producers will really benefit massively from midi control tools that allow them to really take control and meticulously edit their tracks. Maybe it's not as sexy and exciting to people as a new instrument or something like that, but it's really such a fundamental and foundational piece of the system that, unlike an instrument, can't be easily worked around with a 3rd party plugin.
Long story short, Bitwig is a great platform already and in my opinion the best possible path forward is to not "put the cart before the horse" and to really focus on improving the fundamentals of audio and midi tracking and editing! At any rate, I can't wait to see what's coming down the pipe.

+1 Glad to see some insightful post with no trolling but actual useful feedback from an audio producer that know what they are talking about.EmmetPDX wrote:New poster here and new Bitwig user. I'm going to throw my two cents towards both track comping and midi editing features.
Let's hope BW arrives to improve both aspects pretty soon. I'd dare to say that along with an improved sampler, both your points are high on the list.

Well, I wouldn't go that far!ejgallego wrote:from an audio producer that know what they are talking about.
An improved sampler would be great, for sure, although it's in the realm of things that can be worked around using something like Kontakt (if you can afford it, and if you're not a Linux user). Comping and midi features are so fundamental that you really can't get around them without a significant amount of manual hard work.
