Overlapping Chord track clips do weird things.

When using pattern generators, if you have overlapping chords then weird things happen.

To reproduce:
  • Create 4 chord track clips
  • Create a MIDI clip with a chord pattern generator
  • Resize or move chord track clips so they overlap.
In my gif above you can first see the wrong items being resized when I move the second chord's boundary to the right. When I move the second chord's boundary to the left, the wrong chord is pulled forward.

This may fall in to the 'If it hurts when you do that, don't do that' category, but while writing the latest part of my review, I ended up with a mess of midi twice while re-arranging the chord track, and the first time it was difficult to figure out what exactly was wrong.

As you note, it doesn't make any sense to have overlapping chord clips; however I still wanted to allow them to overlap, or else it becomes very difficult to rearrange clips. For example you may want to copy / paste a chord clip and then drag it past some other chord clips. I'll try and make it more obvious when there are two chord clips overlapping.

The issue is that the MIDI is not correct.

Look at how the notes are moved. They do not correspond correctly to the chord clips. Chords are being moved that aren't affected by the overlap, and sometimes the wrong chords are placed.

If you need me to create a better 'how to reproduce', I can. However, this seems really obvious if you just use the chord track and watch the underlying MIDI.

But why would you want overlapping chord clips?

This will be fixed in 9.0.40, when chord overlap, now the end of the first overlapping chord will be ignored. There will also be a warning on the track that there are overlapping chords.

Does this fix the issue with the MIDI of the following chords being incorrect?

Yes, following clips should have their full correct notes now, the previous clip will be truncated.
