I have to say that after nearly two weeks of use I love this daw.

In ease of use it reminds me of Ableton Live, and it even has a partially functioning pattern mode.

The most basic commands are already set up for the pc keyboard, and I would configure them for my personal use in the same way if they were not already setup as I like them.

Groove clip looping is great for duplication. Just right click and activate and drag the track end for as long as desired. Or for multiple tracks control + A to select all, and then right click and activate groove clips and drag out multiple tracks. Doing this sketches out a basic song very quickly and allows for later muting and editing of new tracks to complete the song.

Once I learned how to close the initial clutter and setup a default template I was away. :)

if only I'd thought of that and mentioned it in the previous post LOL :)

(doesn't have to be in the number, can be anywhere in that first whatever it is called bit)
I think that section is referred to as the track strips. That space to the left of the track pane where you control the settings for each track.

Erasing tracks

You can easily delete an entire track, including all of the track properties and all of its clips and events. Sometimes, you only want to erase, or wipe, the contents of a track, leaving the track properties as they are. If you delete or wipe a track by mistake, you can use Edit > Undo to restore the deleted material.

When you delete or wipe a track, the track information is not placed on the Clipboard. To remove material from a track and place it on the Clipboard, use the Edit > Cut command instead.

To delete tracks
1. Select the tracks you want to delete.
2. Click the Track view Tracks menu and choose Delete Track(s).
SONAR deletes the selected tracks. You can also right-click individual tracks and choose Delete Track from the pop-up menu.

To wipe tracks
1. Select the tracks you want to wipe.
2. Click the Track view Tracks menu and choose Wipe Track(s).
SONAR deletes all clips and events from the selected tracks, but leaves the track properties intact.

That's exactly the point I want to reach in the first place -- then, experimenting, exploring and making music at the same time with whatever I go on discovering is my method of learning a DAW and its instruments. :tu:

Does the "SL61" in your avatar refer to the Novation SL61 ?

If so, I had great difficulty in getting automap to work with my Novation SL, in fact I plain just gave up trying. but then I noticed it had decided to start functioning on its own,and has done so for the last few days !

Why, or what I did to help, I have no idea, but now that it does its great. :)

CTRL + L makes any selected clip, audio or midi a groove clip. Shift+L sets transport loop points to selection. L sets transport looping on/off.

Do notice that you can make audio AND midi groove clips to follow pitch changes if you set pitch markers in the time line.

May I ask which DAW's you used before Cakewalk?
This entire forum is wading through predictions, opinions, barely formed thoughts, drama, and whining. If you don't enjoy that, why are you here? :D ShawnG

Thanks.

Any similar simple tips are very welcome.

After using Live for quick song sketching I thought I was done with linear daws, but the simplicity of this daw has got me seeing the possibilities of linear construction again.

As for Live, over time, I found the Session view more of a distraction than anything, and the Arrangement view kind of shitty compared to a dedicated linear DAW...

Yeah, Live is performers&tweakers DAW, awesome to experiment and work on ideas, but after that sucks badly.

Do you really want to know about Steinberg 12 on the Atari ?

Or Bars and Pipes on the Amiga ?

I have licences for Waveform 8

Live

Studio One 3

Energy XT (love it, but its basically dead)

Reaper (will purchase a new licence when 6 is released)

Yeah, because I figure it by your writing you probably never used Logic so you can only compare it to Live for ease of use and I was right, you kinda missed to use probably the best linear DAW on the market that features all those things and more.

Logic is great.

If its coming back to the PC I am in. :tu:

Its main problem at the present time is the dongle, and I am not a fan of dongles.

Yup, that dongle thing is what has kept me from Cubase.

I also have Waveform, Live, and Studio One. But I still like Cakewalk Sonar.

Waveform and Live are great for experimenting, or getting creative. I was happy to have Cakewalk as a linear DAW.

But the crossgrade deal to Studio One was too tempting when Cakewalk was going down. I really like S1 so far, but there are still a few things Cakewalk has that S1 lacks. Like a MIDI event list editor, and a basic notation (staff) view. I know a few folks that really need that stuff sucked it up and went for Cubase.

So it is really cool to know that Cakewalk will be hanging around for a while. I have a lot of unfinished ideas in there that I will not have to bother moving to another DAW. :D

Thanks guys for all the patience, energy and info you shared with me, again realized same thing after demoing yet another DAW, that I made right choice choosing Logic.
