I have followed the same path. Of course usually I wont do that but:
- description of the proposed workflow was very clear
- and this workflow was absolutely new and unique and EXACTLY what I was looking for
After playing round with it now for some weeks I can only say:
- I get exactly what they proposed, and thats NOT the usual thing in this business
There are lots of points which need improvement out of my sight, for example the whole concept is actually very "orchestral based thinking" and for "just" making some electronical music I would like some adaption on this, but if I compare this to some other publications with "1." in front of the version number this is really a version 1.
And the devellopers are very responding, for example the few important bugs that had been in this version had been fixed in about a week.
I am really looking forward to see this grow.
I must admit in general I agree that it is a little bit strange way of marketing but not so unusual (lately: Hexeract.....). I think I would never have done this for VST-Instrument, Effect or DAW but in this corner the applications are still clear even if there is a lot going on recently.
So in the end evrybody has to make his decision, I am happy that there now is a demo version so evrybody can have a look before buying.

I must admit, I don't understand why anyone would want something like this.

In general: I am just a hobby musician with spare time for this AND not very much knowledge in music theory. In my head are mostly ideas of "soundscapes" more then "songs" in the classical way (even if I have been on the road and in bands with irish folk, blues, rock... in another lifeI must admit, I don't understand why anyone would want something like this.
And I am more interested in the sounds now then in the "songconstruct" (in the other life long, long ago I would have beaten evrybody who would have told me something like that and this computer based bullshit in general
So for this, and a very special personal workflow (no midi keyboard normally, evrything done with the help of composer apps or piano roll), I need some "support"
I have already tried out and use lots of things (midi pattern generator and chord track in my DAW Waveform, Rapid Composer, which is great but you need lots of time to get used to it and at leas "stay in tune" with the updates, a dozen other composition apps) but what is for me the bottleneck is just the time I need to get that whats in my head INTO the songconstruct where my really fun begins by flying round in this unbelievable universes of soundpossibilities theses days
And of course the fun to do this. And there I have so far found NOTHING that comes even close to this workflow realized by Orb Composer. Mood based chordprogressions, block based songstructure composition, change of evry part of the composition (melody, chords, instruments....) or the whole composition at once, instrument based generation of voices.....

This thing aks me to enter strong password in order just to download the demo. Are you high, guys?
Does the server collapse under the assault of customers who can't wait but buy your product, or what?

Okay, now I need to enter serial to try demo.
Listen. If you guys want to market new, unusual and innovative product (the sense of which many people question in firts place), you need to make it more accessible to potential customers, not less. As a potential customers I may or may not make a purchase based on how much the company's policy is f**ked up.

Only first version briefly.
There was an issue indeed with every 4th bar missing, felt odd.
Also, there's general problem with syncing DAW recording and Orb Composer. Quite simply, there is no sync and notes end up off the grid. Which is bad if you're into EDM and want a nice 8-bar loop to follow the beat.

I just got the pro version, it's pretty cool.
The upfront work you'll have to do is not trivial if you want to go beyond Artist using 4 pianos. It also uses a lot of memory (You have to load a sampler for every articulation). If you've got 32/64G, you're probably good for the pro version. You could probably get by with a bit less for the Artist version.
But... The results can be amazing and it allows you an easy way to say "what if?"
I have been especially impressed with its melody algorithm.

I’ve been looking closely at Orb Composer and playing with the demo. This is really appealing to me. I’m basically a hobbiest, and I know virtually nothing about orchestral scoring and arranging. I’ve tried to do it on my own quite a few times, with pretty disappointing results. I don’t expect the tools to do all the work for me, but I think Orb Composer might be able to help steer me in the right direction enough to help me achieve the arrangements I hear in my head. What is really great is that the end result is always MIDI data in my own DAW, which I can continue to rework and customize to my own satisfaction.
The only thing holding me back is the price. I am only interested in this program for the orchestral capabilities, so that rules out the Artist version. As a hobbiest who is only interested in casually dabbling with orchestral arranging, the Pro version is an expensive pill to swallow. I would really like to see a full but non-commercial version priced somewhere in the middle, say $250. And then offer an upgrade to the commercial license for the difference.

Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

Seems prices are continually decreasing and they get new resellers. Best price I found so far:

Still a lot of money but I must say I dont regret, I am a hobby musician too with nearly no knowledge in music theory and this tool helps me learning by doing thats the great thing.

There are now several YouTube demos or the orchestral capabilities, but nothing (that I've seen anyway) about using the Artist version in pop/piano/electro modes. I'm idly curious about the pop music capabilities (if any) of this program, as a core of inspiration one can use to then develop tracks further. Has anyone tried using Orb Composer in pop music mode, and, if so, how were the results? Maybe even post a YouTube demo?
