Lets say that I'm creating a custom LFO shape (MOD1>Custom Shape>Edit).
Is there a way to alter the background grid to represent triplets as opposed to the default divisions (1/4)?

Not sure if I understand you, but I think you want to do this:

Right-click in the custom edit window and it will bring up a new window with options.
There are options here for snap to grid X and Y.
To the right of these 2 options, you will see a little magnet type button that will allow you to change the grid.
Just change this so it splits the grid into 3rds.

OK, I see what is going on with the snap options and magnets, my mind is just having trouble with it.
I see 4 equal spaced divisions between 1 and 2 along the bottom. If I change the magnet settings to 3, the bottom numbering system changes to 1 at the start to 3 and the far right, still with 4 divisions between each number. I was expecting to see three divisions between each number.

I understand the confusion. The best way to think of it is, to ignore the last number as it is at the end.
So number 1 is then followed by a space(to the right), number 2 is also followed by a space and number 3 is also followed by a space, however number 4 has nothing to its right (no space) so we cant really count this number.

In short, if you want triplet, use snap value of 4.
