This will be the thing that prevents (IMHO) MYYY from being the all slaying monster it promises to be!
What do you mean by improved filters? What would you want? Filter emulations of hardware synths?

With Equalizer, Filter and Wobbler you already have super complex filters which sound perfect.
The only thing I'd like to see is proper Filter FM. You know that vowel sound that happens when you modulate filter cutoff frequency with an oscillator?

Somehow that seems just impossible to achieve using software filters I guess. On my prophet 12 it works like a charm :D

I tried Fabfilter, filterbank, serum FX, Melda..... fabfilter and melda are the best sounding, and melda has every filter possible.

Not having ever touch a hardware synth, I have no idea what you are referring to andrew. Could you make a video and explain what you are doing to achieve the effect that you are talking about? Maybe it would inspire someone here to be able to closely recreate it for you!

He's talking about the "ay ay" sound here. Sorry I just had this shitty example randomly floating around. I'm sure someone will post a better one.

I don't think it's necessarily a hardware vs software thing, but it definitely works better on some filters than on others.

FM filters and formant/vowel filters sound totally different, so I'm a little confused here. MWobbler already had a vowel filter though.

Yeah, it's just that high frequency filter FM can sound very vocal-ish too. It's just another way of achieving a vocal effect, instead of using a formant filter. Using sample rate reduction after a highly resonant filter works too.

I beleive he’s talking about modulating a filter cutoff extremely quickly. Most LFOs have a max speed of 4Hz-8Hz. FM speeds would be around 20Hz-100Hz. It would be a cool feature, but it might use too much CPU, so I imagine it would need some sort of trick to get it working and not making people’s CPU grind to a halt.

Edit - I just checked and MPS can go up to 100Hz, but you can’t sync the frequeny with the notes played on the keyboard AFAIK.

We can use the custom shape to draw a double sine, now the max frequency can be 200hz. Also, we can use the midi tab to attach keyboard tracking to the frequency of the LFO.

How about MPowerMad

How about "Meldular"?

About the filters: they just don't sound that great. Serum filters sound better. I'm not a DSP Guru so couldn't tell you why. I spent many hours trying to get the MPowerSynth to sound like Serum filters and simply couldn't do it. I'm talking about basic, bread and butter, 6/12/18/24 low pass filters.

Also part of the problem is the ADSR for the filter won't modulate the filter over a wide enough range, so you can't get those very precise, plucky sounds. The MOD ENV. will give you a wider ranger, but that's not a per voice envelope. But with the dedicated ADSR, you can't, for example, modulate the filter from fully open to fully closed (silence). To do that, you need to bump up the resonance, bt that's not what you always want.

I heard that the Serum filters were actually designed by Andy at Cytomic, so apparently it's no small undertaking to make hi-end filters.

Mr D - You can actually very easily close the sound completely with the filters. I can do it with the 12db filter with 0 resonance. I’m not sure how you’re doing it, but it can eaily be done.

I’d love new filters if they do something new, but IMO the MPS filter sound really good. If there is some feature or sound that another filter can do that MPS can’t then of course add it, but I haven’t heard filters that sound much different(when set the same way). If you have some examples from other synths please post them, because the more sounds available the better IMO.

Chandler!

I'm afraid i can't agree with you!

Try this:

MPowerSynth, one OSC with a sawtooth.

Make sure the filter is turned off. Listen.
Now turn on the filter (standard 12dB, no resonance). Now the sound is duller, the highs are being rolled off.
Try to adjust the filter settings so that the sound is identical (in the highs) as when the filter is off. So, try to open it fully.
You won't succeed.
Now dial the filter down so all sound is gone. I mean ALL sound. Again, you won't succeed.
That's what i'm talking about when i say the filters are weak and don't work over a big enough range.
Because for some sounds you want to modulate (with the ADSR) over the whole range of the sound, 20hz to 20000hz.
I love the sound of a 12dB filter with little or no resonance, and there are sounds i can get with Serum that i can't get with MPowerSynth.

Perhaps i'm doing something wrong, if so, please let me know!

You don't tell us which frequency the OSC is generating.

When I consider that the filter cutoff for a 12dB filter must be 5 octaves below the frequency of the OSC to attenuate the signal for 60dB at the base frequency, I wonder why you expect complete silence.

I understand that the filter may be working correctly technically speaking, but that's not what makes a filter sound good.......i'm talking about it working correctly musically. I never said the filter wasn't working correct technically!

In the scenario i sketched, Serum will both fully open the filter (so, sounds the same with filter on or bypassed) and fully close it (silence when fully closed). Even though it's a 12dB filter with no resonance.
Even with a 100hz SAW.

But perhaps it is a technical limitation of the filters.

To silence 100Hz the filter must go down to 3.125Hz. Maybe the one in Serum is capable of that and Melda's filter isn't. As Serum's devs are EDM guys it wouldn't make me wonder that they really care to make their filter work that low.

Why the completely open filter changes the sound I cannot say. I've heard that digital filter start to do unexpected things when nearing their designed upper limit, but I'm not an audio engineer.

I would say the opposite is true, it's exactly in EDM styles where you want to modulate a filter in the way i described.
masitito wrote:But perhaps it is a technical limitation of the filters.
I guess that's precisely the problem, so the filter needs to be changed, right?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the way, i'm not trying to be an overly critical a-hole, but great, musical sounding filters are a must, and it would be a real shame if they weren't upgraded on the upcoming MYYY.

That and better detune / voice spread, those are the things where MPowerSynth is lagging behind the competition.
