The documentation is not very clear on what the Variate control does. I assume it adds randomness to the Transform grid. Is that correct? Does it add randomness anywhere else?

Well, shoudn't that be a company secret? 
Anyways, since that's you, it slightly randomizes each frequency. The sounds is important though!
