First: I love Diva.

A little request:
Vertical continuous (not step-wise) patch browsing, in the normal Mac direction (or in user-selectable direction) with trackpad, mousewheel etc.

The current horizontal scrolling is awkward. It still requires some up-down scrolling since the entire vertical view does not fit. The horizontal scolling also acts very unpredictably (at least with my TrackPad), sometimes not responding at all, sometimes jumping several scroll steps.

I hope this is possible in a near-future update.

Thank you for the super sounds.

I'm just back from the Coco beta celebration, please remind me to elaborate on this tomorrow 8)

It's not just patch browsing; I've long wished for user-selectable scroll direction for scrolling on knobs and faders.

Post

I'm most annoyed that scrolling the mouse DOWN moves the menu entry to the PREVIOUS instead of the NEXT one... And of course inverted scrolling direction in patch browsers (regardless if they're vertical or horizontal scrolling).

Post

I've drafted our reasoning for a horizontally scolling browser. I had to lay it out with a monospace font, maybe we make it into a proper document with proper text and nice tables one day.

That said, we're happy to think about continuous scrolling or better visual clues, and we're happy to add preferences for scroll direction. But if you get our reasoning, the only way to do vertical scrolling is in a single column browser. Which we could of course offer as an alternative view.

Cheers,

Yes, vertical scrolling in a single column browser should be, at least, an option in *any* plug-in.
It's so much more convenient to navigate through presets this way, while still being able to adjust other useful parameters in dedicated tabs (synthesis, performance, effects…).

Post

It's slower, though, and has worse overview of presets. I agree with Urs' reasoning :)

Post

Yes, I known and I'm sure things could be perfected. :)
But ATM you are often forced to switch between different tabs most of the time (Synthesis => Presets, Presets => Synthesis…), which might often lead you to lose your focus.
I like the way Reaktor uses tabs *inside* its left single column browser. Then you've always got your *current* useful information at hand (if you are currently mostly trying different presets).
Why not a "current" view on a single column browser on the left, to show for instance the contents of the current chosen preset folder, *and* the present main dedicated preset tab, as found in most of modern plug-ins (U-He, Arturia…)?

Post

Well, there are prev/next preset arrows right there next to the parameter display, and you can also right-click it to show a list of presets in the current folder...

Post

Yes, that's right.
Though navigating with prev/next preset arrows often feels like walking in the dark (which might be OK from time to time, admittedly).
Right-clicking on the name of the current preset is OK, but what I like in the Reaktor design is that you always navigate through presets, files, folders, and so on, always on the same part of your plug-in (or app), this part being permanently displayed. This solution—at least for me—is never a waste of GUI.
One of my favorite apps, Plogue Bidule, has a retractable "Palette" view, with tabs allowing to chose between different scrolling lists (available modules/AU effects, history…).
Then, I can't stress enough how cool and useful Bidule is, even after all these years :)

Good day/eve -

I do hope (smooth) vertical browsing will at least be offered as a preference/option. This could also allow additional columns in the browsing list, to show, for example, source/designer/company, description, categories, features, character. Thus one could also sort by any of those columns. The window and columns could be resizable.

The idea of a side tab browser, as in Native Instruments Kontakt, sounds great also. That would allow simultaneous preset browsing and access to the Main editing Diva window.

Yes, for all UI controls, please! I like mousing over a control with my right hand and adjusting via trackpad with my left, but the scroll behavior in U-he plugins on Mac requires a swipe down to turn a control up. :ud: Logic’s controls behave the opposite way, so this has always bugged me.

Post

Yep! The scrolling behavior makes digging presets really awkward.. One column, top to bottom is the only way that makes really sense.

Until then, pleeeeease let us simply switch the scrolling direction.. :help:

Perhaps to some, but it's much slower than it is currently. So I disagree. What u-he uses right now makes more sense.

I'm pretty sure I saw some options to change the browser column behavior in the skin editor at one point. The Aiko skin also has a single column vertical browser. So what I'm suggesting is, if it really bothers you, you can always use a different skin, or roll your own skin.

For my money, the white Aiko skin improves both the look, and usability of Diva. The skin is aesthetically pleasing, but it also adds a few really nice improvements to usability with things like:

1. Almost everything is on one page
2. The order of the modules makes more sense (LFO's in top left with other modules)
3. Modulation routing is much clearer (Massive-style modulation)
4. The effects settings are much clearer (shows you things like where each note is on the delay)
5. Even has a mini patch browser (also single column continuous - not shown in screenshot below)
