pretty helpful information and explaination WAGS, thanks.

What I want to know is if Vocaloid 5 is compatible with previous Vocaloid voices.

For example, Premium is more expensive because it comes with 8 voices instead of 4. Now 2 of them, Diva and Songman, I already have in Vocaloid 4. Will they still work in 5 or have they been reengineered to be compatible with Vocaloid 5?

And then what about older Vocaloids? Will they work? If not, this presents a problem unless I simply use Vocaloid 4 for older voices.

I see an email to Yamaha is coming.

Im sure the product page states support for v3 and V4 voices, and the 'premium' version seems to include a couple of V4 voices.

yup, as i thought:
Use Voice Banks from VOCALOID3 and 4 without Modification

Voice banks from VOCALOID3 and 4 can be used in VOCALOID5 without modification. You can use VOCALOID5 to rediscover your favorite singing voice.

So it does appear that anything from Vocaloid 2 and back might present a problem. I'm not sure what Vocaloids I have from 1 and 2, if any, but I'll check. I'm sure it's no more than 1 or 2 tops.

Maybe; the V1 and V2 convertor was dropped from when V4 came out wasnt it?

Okay, I just checked. My oldest Vocaloid is Vocaloid 3 so I'm good.

Upgrade isn't bad for Standard considering it comes with 4 additional voices that I don't have (normally cost $100 each alone) and is only $149 upgrading from Vocaloid 4. I paid $100 for the Vocaloid 4 engine alone without any voices. So this is a really great deal.

I'm not sure. I didn't bother checking because at the time I bought Vocaloid 4 (my first ever) I only had a few libraries that I purchased with it and they were all V4s. But yeah, it's quite possible that 1s and 2s never worked with V4.

All I know is they sounded so bad I didn't bother getting them.

Getting back to this. I've had people flat out tell me to my face that they refuse to listen to any of my music as long as I use Vocaloid.

I'd say that's pretty much bad enough.

Okay, this is Yohio from Sweden, a 17 year old singer at the time of the Vocaloid creation for him.

And here's a Vocaloid track I did with his likeness.

Obviously a huge difference. Like I said, no dynamics. And you're not getting that from V5 either. But if the robotic voice goes, that's a big leap.

There's a difference between having a 'philosophical' (for want of a better term..) objection to something on the grounds of 'lack of emotion', 'artistry' etc, and not liking something because of the way it sounds. I use sampled drums, strings, etc, and would have no problem with machine singers, except that they sound shite. A bit less shite now....

That's a lot of hens.

Well, I guess this is a matter of opinion too because I think some samples sound like shite and yet people use them.

Of course it is. As I said, I have no deep seated objection to Vocaloid etc, just don't like the sound of it, you may love it. :scared:
