Hi all,

I've seen the problem with the sustain pedal, however, CC66, the sostenuto pedal doesn't seem to work at all. Can somebody verify this?

All the best

Yep, no synth we know of supports it. It also hasn't ever been requested IIRC...

Can you name a soft synth which implements it correctly for reference?

Post

Pianoteq (obviously). :P (Don't laugh, the Pro version can almost be used as a synth!)

Kontakt can do it, as well.

Before sostenuto pedal, I just wish that sustain pedal didn't eat up the on-release retriggered notes when mono legato trilling (but you know about this for a long time now, I mention it sporadically, sadly it doesn't seem to get the spotlight). Performance-wise, it's really not cool when trying to legato as much as possible in monophonic mode. And since it's all in the same framework, all your synths have the same issue :(

And Roli Equator

Repros too? - They use a different voice management solution.

Post

Yes, Repros, too.

Let me explain this shortly once again.

1. Mono or mono legato playback mode
2. Hold a middle C note, then keep fat staccato tapping D right next to it while the C is still held down, so that you get a C-D-C-D-C-D-C-D trill -> that works as it's supposed to
3. Do the same thing with sustain pedal -> doesn't return back to C at all, it should behave exactly the same as when sustain pedal isn't pressed

It seems that sustain pedal makes the voice engine "forget" about the previously held note, instead of returning to it if it's still physically held down on the keyboard.

Post

Errrm, when you hold C, then press Sustain pedal, then press D - you get D. When you lift D, it naturally remains at D because Hold pedal still pressed...?

Post

What an unfair derailment of my CC66 issue to CC64, 68 & 69 issues :hihi:

I'm not sure if I want a synthesizers sustain pedal to mimic that of a piano. I would, however, love to hold an octave in the bass (bordun, baby) and change chords on top of it.

And let's not confuse sustain, sostenuto and Hold 2.

Just try the trills as ED suggested and you will get it :-)

Post

Well, if I try it it is obviously wrong? Would make more sense to explain how it's supposed to be. Better even, link documentation.

Post

OK, will do… although simply trying the trills would make the problem immediately obvious.

How it should be: In legato mode, Sustain should only sustain the envelope, not freeze the pitch.
In mono mode Sustain should do the same, but Note On should retrigger - as well as Note Off if a key is still being physically held.

I just tried it with a few synths:

Legend, Tal Bassline, Halion 6, Massive, Korg Odyssey and Monark did ED's desired behaviour.

Strobe2, Icarus, Repro1, Diva, Zebra ignore everything played after the first C and D..

Thorn, Omnisphere ignores (does not sound) the C after the first and just triggers a new D whenever one is played.

Which one is the correct behaviour?
I don't think I have personally ever encountered that behaviour because I don't recall ever using a sustain pedal when executing a trill.
