Hi !
I'm on mac, waveform 9.0.37.
All is Ok, except... midi file export.
I have written a midi track, and now I want to export it in order to import this midi file in a notation and scoring software (Presonus Notion).
1. When my midi track is ok in W9, I press "export" then "render to a file".
2. I select "midi file" ; I select the name of the file and the place I want to export it.
3. I press "render" ==> It renders, BUT the file is not exported !! (I have checked inside my machine HD : nothing. The midi file has not been exported from W9).

--> Any idea ? I do something wrong ?
As a very "old user" (since T1) I'm becoming crazy. Your help will be welcome.

Note : if I do exactly the same in order to export a wav (or aif) file, the result is correct (as usual).
What happens with the midi ?

Post

You synth is probably eating all the midi messages. Try disabling 'passthrough plugins' on the export dialog, or manual disable your synth (if you have midi effect plugins you still want working)

Post

Hi FigBug !

I've tried yet disabling the 'passthrough plugins' solution without any success.

I have to try now to render to midi file disabling the VSTi (or better, deleting them).
Thanks a lot for your advise.
I will try and I keep you informed.

Cheers.

Hi FigBug !

When I delete the VSTi plugin before rendering/exporting my track as a midi file, Waveform exports and renders effectively a midi file in the place desired. This file is a midi file type 1.
BUT... this W9 created midi file...
--> can be imported and read by Logic Pro X (v10.4.1), but the original tempo is not available in Logic.
--> cannot be imported in Presonus Studio One Pro v3.5. SO don't recognize the file as an acceptable file to be imported
--> cannot be imported in Presonus Notion 6 : in this case, the file is accepted, but as nothing to do with the created midi file (the original file has 15 arpegiated bars, is imported as a 5 bars chords-only midi file)...
--> can be imported and correctly read in Reason 10 (at the correct tempo)...

So...
1. it will be interesting than in an a new release, we will not be obliged to delete the VSTi in order to export a midi file. The "passthrough plugin" case to be checked is normally done to do this job...
2. it will be also very interesting if this exported midi file would be accepted correctly in a scoring editor like Notion 6. I don't know if other score editors accept correctly the exported W9 midi files, but even in this case, I don't have the financial capability to buy Finale, Sibelius or Steinberg Dorico...

Your point of view ?
Thanks in advance,
Lutin mutin.

Hi TSC team !

I'm alone with this kind of problem ?
Depending only on my personal machine install ?

Your point of view will be very much appreciated...
Thanks in advance.

Hmmm. Files should be appearing in the third column in the right-hand part of the project details on the Projects page under the heading Exported Audio/MIDI. You shouldn't have to delete the VSTi, only to uncheck the Pass Through Plugins option.

If you export it as a .WAV and leave the Pass Through Plugins option checked, does a file appear on the Projects page where I suggested?
[W10-64, T5/6/7/W8/9/10/11/12/13, 32(to W8)&64 all, Spike],[W7-32, T5/6/7/W8, Gina16] everything underused.

I gave up on this MIDI export feature with Waveform 8 last year. I reported that it was apparently exporting all the MIDI tracks as a type 0 MIDI (all the channels on one track), although it should be a type 1 MIDI file (separate tracks).

As far as I know this has never been corrected.

The only DAW i was able to successfully import this file into was Reaper, which automatically detected the MIDI data and asked if I wanted to split it into individual tracks. Success!

But in the other DAWs I tried this with, the MIDI channels were all bunched up onto one track. Ugh.

Hi men !

Since the early beginning of Tracktion (T1.5), this soft has always been oriented to audio. I was in audio recording. I was really very happy. The soft was really very useful, very very easy to work with... yet in those days, a lot of users were not happy with the midi performances. I heard them, but I was not concerned...

Some years after, with the development of the VSTi instruments, I've been using the midi capabilities in order to create audio through the VSTi. For this particular use, Tracktion was still operational for me and I was still happy with its capabilities... but because I am a big fan of this soft from the beginning (the Jules' concept was... not... still is revolutionary), I was a lot of time on KVR, and I was hearing a lot of midi users claiming, been angry against the problems their have with the deeper midi use...

Now, I've decided to go in depth with the midi, because I want to compose music for movies, orchestral music and other kind of music with VSTi (so with midi), and then to export the midi files in order to use an external notation scoring editor to... yeah, you know what I mean...
And in the actual situation of this soft, is not possible.
Now I have to face some midi problems this soft has always had... never really corrected...

Tracktion has always be my primary DAW. My favorite tool. My composing tool. My musical tool.
This was yesterday. No more today...
Because Tracktion and now Waveform is "my" DAW, I will have to quit this soft for all related to compose my actual kind of music...
Sure, I will keep it for all related audio creation, for testing new ideas, for a lot of draft and quick musical ideas, but I will be forced to work with an other DAW for "serious" musical creation... up to the TSC team find time to re-write deeply the all programming parts related with midi... and my "cristal bowl" says to me that this kind of work is not really in their priorities...
So...

At the beginning, when creating this thread I was like crazy.
Now...
Now I'm just really sad...

I have upgraded to the Waveform ultimate bundle, because I like what the Tracktion team is doing, and the creativity/fun factor of Waveform in unmatched. Awesome idea generator! :tu:

But that said, I have PreSonus Studio One 3, and Notion 6, for more serious efforts. There are many other tools in addition to these, available to suit different musical creation tasks and workflows. You don't always have to pick 'just one', unless you are a serious pro pressed for productivity while a client is paying on the clock. I enjoy the diversity of multiple tools and the strengths that each brings to the table.

I find Waveform to be the most inspirational tool I have ever worked with. It can be as simple, or complex, as you want it to be. Very flexible, and the pattern generators are killer! I also have Ableton Live for use as a creative starting point for fresh ideas, but I always seem to find myself drawn instead to Waveform to play around in. I just seem to get more done in there. :D

Thanks for your support/comments zzzOOm !

I will have to do something like you suggest : different musical tools for different musical needs and/or creativity...
So, let's change my very long time music tool habits !... ;-)

EDIT Nov 18: All these problems with paths I had disappeared with a windows repair install!!!.....the old post: I m a total beginner in Waveform.....I have the same problem and more. I export, render.....there is no file to be found in the specified export place. Only result: my lovingly created midi track is overwritten, gone. :....I too would like to export midi files for use in a notation software. (I use Overture, but also have Notion).
Presumibly I do everything wrong....Can someone kindly give a step-by-step answer how to export a midi file (and then really find it somewhere on the computer)? Thank you.

Hey, sorry to hear you are having trouble. The best way to get help around here is to start a new topic. This is an old thread, and not as likely to get attention on your specific issue.

Post as much detail as you are able to regarding the steps you have taken so far, and the results that you got.
